Walker Walks-Off Monarchs with OT Winner

St. John's IceCaps News Release

Ben Walker scored the game-winner in overtime as the St. John's IceCaps beat the first place Manchester Monarchs 1-0 Tuesday night at Mile One Centre.

Walker's marker came at 2:58 of the extra frame on a perfect stretch pass from JC Lipon, who sprung the rookie forward on a partial breakaway. Walker made no mistake in snapping a wrister past Monarchs goaltender Patrik Bartosak for his first pro goal, giving the IceCaps their second straight victory.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped all 33 shots he faced for his third shutout and 14th win of the season just hours after being named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

After two scoreless periods, the IceCaps thought they finally broke the tie when Blair Riley threw a puck in front that hit Nic Blanchard and appeared to deflect past Bartosak and over the goal line. Upon further review, the goal was waived off and the score remained 0-0.

A gutsy penalty kill in the final minutes of regulation set the stage for Walker's heroics in overtime as St. John's improved to 2-1 in the New Year.

The IceCaps finish their two-game set with the Monarchs Wednesday at Mile One Centre (7:30 p.m. NST). Tickets are available at the Mile One Centre Box Office, by phone at (709) 576-7657 and online at www.mileonecentre.com .
