Spitfires Top Sting on Ugly Christmas Sweater Night
December 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Sarnia Sting News Release
Brendan Lemieux scored three third period goals and the Windsor Spitfires downed the Sarnia Sting 3-0, before a crowd of 3,096 at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
Lemieux, who was acquired mid-week from the Barrie Colts, has paid quick dividends for the Spitfires. He tallied a goal and an assist in his debut last night against his old team and followed that up with a natural hat trick tonight. Lemieux was the second star. Christian Fischer contributed a pair of assists.
Michael DiPietro, stopped all 29 shots he faced, earning his first shut-out of the season, along with first star honors tonight. The Sting did all they could do with a depleted line-up that was missing both Pavel Zacha and Jakob Chychrun, who were away attending their respective WJC selection camps.
Justin Fazio played well, keeping the high powered offense of the Spitfires off the board for two periods. Fazio finished with 30 saves on 33 shots and was named third star of the game. A scoreless first period was just as close on the shot clock as Sarnia had one better then Windsor at 13-10. Both goaltenders were sharp when needed.
The second period was almost a carbon copy of the first twenty minutes, with the exception of the minor penalties. A scoreless period with three minors called. Both Logan Stanley for Windsor and Zachary Core for Sarnia, were sent to the sin bin at the same time (7:40) for roughing. The Spitfires had a dominate period outshooting the Sting 10-3.
Lemieux scored three times, in three different situations in the final period. An even strength goal at 3:42, with his second goal coming less than three minutes later with the Spitfires enjoying a two man advantage. He capped of the natural hat trick with an empty net goal in the final seconds.
The Sting offense had it's chances throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize on the red hot goaltender Michael DiPietro as he stood tall for the Spitfires.
Sting Notebook:
It was the ugly Christmas sweater night at the SSEC presented by Mainstreet Credit Union and the fans certainly had their share. Windsor scored once on four chances on the power play. Sarnia did not have a man advantage throughout the contest.
Sarnia was missing two important pieces in their line-up tonight as Pavel Zacha (Team Czech) and Jakob Chychrun (Team Canada) were attending their WJC selection camps.
Windsor out shot Sarnia 33-29.
Sarnia finishes off weekend play at home Sunday night (7:05 puck drop) against the Flint Firebirds.
