IceDogs Skate Past Spirit 2-1=21
December 11, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs skated to a hard fought 2-1 victory Thursday night against the visiting Saginaw Spirit for their third straight win.
The IceDogs came out strong Thursday night looking to build on their Tuesday night victory against the Peterborough Petes. They opened up the scoring early when Anthony DiFruscia put home a rebound off an initial chance by Pavel Jenys. They continued to put on great pressure throughout the first, ending the period with a lead of 13-7 in the shots column.
The second period belonged to the goaltenders as neither team was able to find the back of the net, despite two power plays for each team. Alex Nedeljkovic was solid in his second start with the team, making a couple key glove saves to hold off the Spirit and keep the IceDogs lead at 1-0. The shots on goal in the period favoured Saginaw 12-6.
Saginaw would open the third with an early marker, tying things at 1-1. The IceDogs would have no quit in them though, responding with two major 5-on-3 penalty kills. Nedeljkovic highlighted the penalty kills with a key cross crease pad save to keep the contest tied up. Not to be out done, the IceDogs other new addition Josh Wesley, would leave the penalty box, come down the wing and cut into the slot, placing a perfect wrist shot past the glove hand of the Saginaw goalie to give the IceDogs a 2-1 lead and send the building into a frenzy with just over six minutes left to play. Nedeljkovic would be a wall from there shutting down every chance Saginaw could muster up. The shots on goal were 10-7 in Saginaw's favour, tallying up to a game total of 29-26 for Saginaw. Nedeljkovic was strong once again making 28 saves for his second win as an IceDog.
Josh Wesley, Alex Nedeljkovic, and Jordan Maletta picked up the games three stars, with the team's two new players playing a significant factor in another IceDogs' victory. The Dogs' will be in Oshawa to take on the Generals tomorrow night, and will be back at home next Thursday to face off against the Sudbury Wolves. Tickets are still available for all IceDogs' home games and can be purchased at all IceDogs' ticketing locations.
