Brampton Steelheads News Release
Windsor, ON - The Steelheads played their first of three straight road games Thursday night as they travelled to Windsor to take the Spitfires for their one and only visit to the WFCU Centre. The two teams met back on November 13th where the Spitfires shot down Mississauga 7-4. Windsor entered tonight's game struggling as they've dropped their last four games, with their last win coming on November 27th against the Saginaw Spirit. The Steelheads were victorious in four of their last five games and sit tied for first in the Central Division with the Barrie Colts with 34 points.
The Steelheads opened the scoring early on as Nathan Bastian netted his 11th of the season from Stephen Gibson just 19 seconds into the first. Both teams had an opportunity with the man-advantage but neither could capitalize as the Steelheads held a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Mississauga would capitalize on their third power play opportunity of the game as Owen Tippett went bar down to finish off a nice passing play with Nathan Bastian and Alexander Nylander. The Steelheads held a 2-0 lead over the Spitfires after 40 minutes of play.
The Spitfires came into the final frame looking to cut the deficit, and they would do just that with goals from Logan Brown, Brendan Lemieux, and Aaron Luchuk. Brown's goal came on the power play as he received a touch pass and lifted the puck just over Flinn's glove. Lemieux would also capitalize on the power play from Brown and Christian Fischer to even the score at 2-2 just past the midway point of the period. Luchuk gave the Spits their first lead at 16:49 of the third. With time winding down the Steelheads would strike again as Nic Hague dumped the puck in front of the Windsor net where Owen Tippett fought through the crowd, scoring his second of the night to send the game into overtime.
Damian Bourne would be the overtime hero as he picked up an awkward bounce off Garrett Hughson's pads and made no mistake netting his eighth of the season for a 4-3 win. Following tonight's game, the Steelheads will head across the border to Flint to take on the Firebirds Friday night.
