
Special Teams Sink Monarchs

Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Three power play goals lifted the Lowell Lock Monsters over the Manchester Monarchs 5-3 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of 9,581 fans on Friday night.
Manchester (22-11-1-4, 49 points) fell to third place in the Atlantic Division with the loss. Lowell (15-20-1-4, 35 points) moves into fifth place in the Atlantic Division.
Defenseman Mark Ardelan sat in the penalty box for hooking and left the Monarchs shorthanded. Defenseman Richard Seeley stole the puck from the Lock Monsters and chipped it ahead to center Connor James on a breakaway. James skated in on Lowell's goaltender Vitaly Kolesnik and ripped a shot five-hole for his 11th goal of the season at 14:20 of the first period.
The Lock Monsters tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at 6:42 of the second period. Center Krys Kolanos slipped the puck past Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera at the right post for his third goal of the season. Center David Gove and left wing Cody McLeod assisted on the tying goal.
The Monarchs took another penalty that put defenseman Richard Petiot in the penalty box. Left wing Paul Healey, set up in front of the net, accepted a pass from center Mike Zigomanis. Healey juggled the puck and then threw a backhander into the net for his sixth of the season at 8:32 of the second period. Gove also assisted on the Lock Monsters second power play goal of the game.
McLeod scored his first of the season, a power play goal, at 17:17 of the middle frame. LaBarbera stopped the initial shot by Kolanos but McLeod picked up the rebound and scored into the open net as LaBarbera sprawled across the crease. Center Keith Aucoin also assisted on the goal.
Manchester connected on the power play at 4:06 as Ardelan scored his sixth of the season. Cycling the puck on the power play, defenseman Eric Werner sent the puck over left wing Noah Clarke, who fed it cross-ice to Ardelan at top of the right face-off circle. Ardelan sent a slap shot straight through the legs of Kolesnik.
Lowell came right back and scored off of a face-off deep in the Monarchs zone. Gove won the face-off back to defenseman Danny Richmond at the point who sent the puck past LaBarbera on the blocker side at 4:20 of the third period for his fourth goal of the season.
Right wing Brad Smyth brought the game to within one as he gently feathered the puck between Kolesnik's nearly stacked pads for his 18th goal of the season at 8:15 of the final period. Werner gave the puck to center Yanick Lehoux who sent a pretty pass up to Smyth for the goal to bring the game to 4-3.
Defenseman Johnny Boychuk scored the insurance goal for the Lock Monsters at 13:14 of the third period as he shot a rocket from the right point. Both teams skating a man down, Healey and Aucoin cycled the puck and passed it to Boychuk at the point for his third of the season.
LaBarbera (0-1-1) took his second consecutive loss of the season stopping 38 shots. Kolesnik (12-9-0) earned his 12th win of the season with 31 saves.
Manchester went 1-for-10 on the power play. Lowell was 3-for-9 with the man advantage.
The Monarchs head down to face the Albany River Rats at the Pepsi Arena on Saturday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m.
