Norfolk Admirals News Release

The Norfolk Admirals picked up their first victory against division foe Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, winning 5-3 on Friday night at Scope.

An action-packed first period saw the Penguins jump in front early. Less than two minutes into the game, Rico Fata skated in on Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford on a partial breakaway. Crawford denied Fata's shot, but Stephen Dixon put the rebound past him at 1:45. Wilkes-Barre would control much of the first five minutes of play, but penalties by the Penguins gave the momentum to Norfolk for the rest of the period. About six minutes after Wilkes-Barre's goal, recent Canadian All-Star selectee Martin St. Pierre skated from the left face-off dot to the slot, unloading a wrister that eluded Penguins netminder Dany Sabourin for a power play goal at 7:50. Ten minutes later as an Admirals man-advantage had just expired, Quintin Laing found Mark Cullen streaking through the slot. Cullen's initial shot was stopped, but he stashed his rebound chance home at 17:58. The Admirals took a 12-6 shot edge and a 2-1 lead into the locker room for the first break.

The second period saw the Penguins score early once again. Jonathan Filewich scored a power play goal at 1:44 to knot the score at two goals apiece. Norfolk responded three minutes later on a power play of their own. Cullen sent a cross-ice pass to Nathan Barrett, who was closing in alone on Sabourin. Barrett sent a wrister past the Penguins netminder stick side at 4:47. Ryan Stone deflected a Dennis Bonvie shot past Crawford to briefly tie the game at 3-3 at 10:47. Less than three minutes later, Ajay Baines put the Admirals on top 4-3 by firing one past Sabourin from the slot at 13:34. Norfolk held a 24-13 shot clock advantage and a 4-3 scoring edge going into the final frame.

Carl Corazzini rounded out scoring just 1:09 into the third, powering past a Wilkes-Barre defender in the crease and sliding the puck beneath the outstretched pads of Sabourin. Corey Crawford stayed strong between the pipes in the final frame by stopping 15 shots, and the Admirals won the game 5-3.

Corey Crawford stopped 25 of 28 shots and got the win. Dany Sabourin made 25 saves and picked up the loss.

Norfolk was 2-5 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre was 1-6.
