Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers, coming off their fifth straight win overall - and sixth consecutive victory on home ice - continue a busy and exciting month at the Arena at Harbor Yard this Friday, Feb. 16th when the Lowell Devils visit for the fifth of nine February home contests. The Sound Tigers were 4-0 this past week (all at home) and goaltender Wade Dubielewicz set the franchise record for saves in a game with 52 in a win over the Hershey Bears. The overall and home winning streaks are both season highs for the Sound Tigers who pulled seven points ahead of Albany in the race for the East Division's last playoff spot.
Weekly recap
The Sound Tigers are finding a variety of ways to win - a shootout, overtime effort, come-from-behind battles and record-setting performances all highlighted this past week's action.
Feb. 7 - Sound Tigers 2, Worcester Sharks 1 (overtime)
Eric Boguniecki batted a loose puck out of the air and into the net for the decisive goal in a 2-1 overtime victory. Boguniecki crashed the goal mouth and connected on a rebound of Jamie Fraser's point shot that kicked off the end wall and into the crease area just below the cross bar. The goal came during a rare five-on-three overtime power play - and was scored at 4:32 of the extra session.
Feb. 9 - Sound Tigers 4, Hershey Bears 2
Dubielewicz made a franchise-record 52 saves in the win, breaking the mark of 51 he actually set against the same opponent in a shootout win at Hershey on Jan. 20th. Although Hershey is on the heels of the league's best, Norfolk, for the top spot in the East Division the Sound Tigers have won six of seven against the Bears.
Feb. 10 - Sound Tigers 4, Lowell Devils 3 (shootout)
Brandon Nolan had two assists and scored the clincher in the shootout. This marked the team's 16th overtime game, 10th shootout (record of 6-4) and 20th one-goal contest this season. Dubielewicz made 38 saves. The Sound Tigers are 3-0 against Lowell (including an overtime win) and when all is said and done will face the Devils four times in a two-week period this month.
Feb. 11 - Sound Tigers 5, Binghamton Senators 3
Goaltender Billy Thompson stopped 48 shots, Mark Wotton had a goal and two assists (giving him two goals and three assists in the last two games) and Boguniecki scored twice.
In the standings: The Sound Tigers are 25-20-1-4. They improved to 13-9-3 at home and have points in nine of 10 home games (eight wins, one shootout loss) in calendar year 2007. The Sound Tigers have just four regulation defeats in 17 games since the calendar page flipped to January. The only regulation home defeat was to the Norfolk Admirals.
Powerful power play: The Sound Tigers scored the game-winning or game-tying goal during a power play in the second period, third period or overtime in each of first four games of their current winning streak. The power play has connected for nine goals in the last six games (an impressive 9-for-29 during that time).
Streaking: Boguniecki has goals in four consecutive games. He had the game-winners against Worcester and Hershey this past week.
Lots of saves: Sound Tiger goaltenders stopped 167 of 176 shots in the four games this past week - and average of more than 40 saves per game.
Blocking shots: Sound Tiger players blocked numerous shots in games this past week with Steve Regier, Drew Fata and Allan Rourke redirecting several pucks.
Assisting on the Island: Bridgeport's leading scorer Jeff Tambellini has four assists in seven games with the parent club New York Islanders.
