Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Senators (15-28-2-5, 37 pts.) went 1-2 last week, including a 4-2 win over nemesis Rochester on Wednesday night at the Arena.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 7th vs. ROCHESTER (4-2 W):
The B-Sens got the Rochester monkey off their backs on Wednesday night, beating the Amerks for the first time this season. The win was the third straight for Binghamton, also a first this season. Josh Hennessy celebrated his 22nd birthday with a three-point night (2+1=3), while Ryan Vesce added two points (1+1=2). After a scoreless first period, Marek Zagrapan put the Amerks on the scoreboard. The center collected the rebound following a Janis Sprukts shot and tapped it past netminder Kelly Guard. Josh Hennessy tied the game up at 6:15 of the third, as Ryan Vesce fed him a backhand pass that Hennessy smashed past goalie Adam Dennis. Rochester reclaimed the lead when Drew Stafford snapped a wrist shot slipped through the pads of Guard, slowly moving across the goal line. Jeff Heerema tapped home a loose puck three minutes later, finally slipping his second attempt past Dennis. Vesce's game winner came when he slashed in from left to right in front of netminder Adam Dennis. Vesce went to the backhanded shot through the five hole to give the Senators their first victory this season over Rochester. Hennessy added a late empty-netter to finish the scoring. Heerema finished with a goal and an assist, while Kelly Guard had 39 saves on the night.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10th @ WBS (2-4 L):
Jeff Glass tied a career-high with 43 saves on Saturday night, while Ryan Vesce extended his assist streak to eight games setting a new B-Sens record that was previously held by 2004-05 AHL most valuable player Jason Spezza. Vesce's point streak ranks second to Andrew Ebbett's season-high nine-game point streak. The efforts of Glass and Vesce were not enough, as the Penguins defeated the B-Sens by a 4-2 final. Following a scoreless opening period in which the B-Sens tied a season-low with 3 shots, the Penguins took a 1-0 lead at 3:53 of the second period. Connor James slipped an even-strength tally past Jeff Glass. Defenseman Matt Carkner made it a 2-0 Penguins lead with his third tally of the season, a power-play marker. Binghamton responded as center Josh Hennessy buried his 20th marker of the season. Hennessy has seven goals in his last nine games. Bobby Robins and Ryan Vesce assisted on the tally. Defenseman Neil Komadoski scored his first goal in 38 games to knot the score at 2 apiece. Danny Bois and Matt Koalska collected helpers on the play. Daniel Carcillo scored the game-winner at 17:40 of the final period. The Penguins added a late-empty netter to make it a 4-2 final.
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11th @ BRIDGEPORT (3-5 L):
The B-Sens took a season-high 51 shots on Sunday against the Sound Tigers, but only converted three of those shots into points as former B-Sens goalie Billy Thompson made 48 saves to push Bridgeport to a 5-3 win. All-Star center Josh Hennessy recorded his 100th AHL point on Sunday when the 22-year-old buried a marker past Thompson at 11:53 of the first period. For the second consecutive game, the B-Sens fought their way to a scoreless tie at the end of the opening period. Bridgeport capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play, as Sound Tigers winger Brandon Nolan buried his eighth marker of the season to make it a 1-0 game. Less than a minutes later, Eric Boguniecki slipped the puck past netminder Kelly Guard for a second power-play tally to extend the lead.
Bridgeport finished off the man-advantage scoring, capitalizing on a Cory Pecker unsportsmanlike conduct call at 13:53 of the second period, as defenseman Mark Wotton buried just his fourth marker of the year. The B-Sens bounced back early in the third period off an Arttu Luttinen even-strength tally to make it a 3-1 contest. Matt Koalska assisted on the play. Eric Boguniecki struck again at 9:02 of the final period to extend the Sound Tigers lead to three goals yet again. Josh Hennessy answered with an unassisted tally, his 21st of the season, as the All-Star slipped the puck past former Binghamton Senator Billy Thompson. After a Bridgeport empty-netter, leading scorer Jeff Heerema netted his 24th goal of the season to make it a 5-3 final.
THIS WEEK: The Senators play two games this week, both against divisional opponents. The B-Sens travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday night to take on the Penguins at 7:05 p.m. The two teams match-up five times in the month of February. On Saturday night, the Senators take on Norfolk at the First Arena in Elmira at 7:05 p.m. This marks the second consecutive year that the B-Sens have played a home-game away from the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
