Kalamazoo Wings News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN- The Kalamazoo Wings scored a season-high six goals, including three in 2:29 during the third period against the Fort Wayne Komets, en route to a 6-4 victory on Saturday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
After heading to their first power play of the night, Fort Wayne's Jordan Southorn took advantage of the extra space on the ice and walked in from the blue line where he snapped a wrist shot from the high slot off the bar. The defenseman chased down his own rebound and lifted a backhander past Joel Martin and into the goal.
Just a minute and a half later, Kalamazoo would draw even while shorthanded. As the Wings pounced on a loose puck in their own end, they sprung it into a two-on-one with Lane Scheidl and Tyler Shattock. Scheidl took a shot that was initially saved, but Shattock converged upon the rebound to tally his second of the year.
With time winding down in the first period, Fort Wayne re-opened their lead to a goal. Shawn Szydlowski carried the puck down the right wing side and beat Martin with a quick drive that scooted over his pad and into the goal.
Trailing by a goal at the beginning of the third period, Dane Fox would equalize for the Wings. With an unmarked puck along the side of the goal, Fox dashed behind the cage and was able to poke it into a vacant corner of the net for his third tally of the year and third in as many games.
Kalamazoo would then add to their lead a few moments later. With time having just wound down on a Wings' power play, Steve McCarthy found some space from the blue line and drove a slap shot into the back of the goal for his first tally of the season and Kalamazoo's first lead of the game.
The lead would be short lived, though, as the Komets would even the score with the benefit of some puck luck. With a pass from Szydlowski sliding towards the goal, Dean Ouellet angled his skates towards the goal and deflected the puck off his blade and in. The goal took the Wings and Komets into the dressing room after two periods tied at three.
Entering the third and tied at three, the contest had all the makings of a third straight one-goal game for Kalamazoo. However, an offensive eruption in the final period helped the Wings pull away. Shattock started the scoring in the third for the Wings with his second of the night, 7:08 into the frame.
Just a minute and a half later, Kalamazoo would increase their lead to two goals with Justin Taylor registering his second of the season. Taylor wrapped the puck around to the far side of the open goal and made it two unanswered for the Wings.
Having already scored two goals in a minute and a half, Kalamazoo wouldn't be done with their scoring eruption. Fox tallied his second of the night with a wrist shot from the left wing and gave the Wings a 6-3 lead. Kalamazoo's three goals in 2:29 of play were enough cushion to close out Fort Wayne, even with a late tally from Brett Perlini on the power play.
