Evansville IceMen News Release

CINCINNATI, OH - It took 42 minutes, 24 seconds to find the game's first goal Saturday night at US Bank Arena, but the Cincinnati Cyclones scored twice early in the third period to beat the Evansville IceMen 2-1 in their first of nine meeting this season.

In a battle of rookie goaltenders, Evansville's Christoffer Bengtsberg and Cincinnati's Brandon Whitney stopped all ten shots they saw in the first period. Bengtsberg, who won his first ECHL game Friday 4-2 against Indy, made 11 saves in the second. Whitney, who was making just his second start of the season, turned away 9 that period.

With the game scoreless, the Cyclones opened the scoring 2:24 into the third period, when defenseman Garrett Noonan snuck a wrist shot under the blocker of Bengtsberg. 2:31 later, defenseman Steve Weinstein joined the Cincinnati rush in transition and lifted a shot under the crossbar to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.

Evansville received its fourth power-play opportunity of the game in the final minutes, and with Bengtsberg pulled for an extra attacker, Daultan Leveille spoiled Whitney's shutout with :16 seconds left. It was Leveille's second goal in as many nights, as he now has points in four of the last five games. But it was too little, too late for the IceMen who fall to 2-5-0-0. Cincinnati moves to 5-1-0-1, as Whitney recorded his first career win.

The two next meet December 11 at the Ford Center in Evansville, and face-off again the following night in Cincinnati.

The IceMen hit the road next weekend for three games in three days. First, Evansville heads to Kalamazoo, MI for a Friday night contest with the Wings. The IceMen then head to Wheeling, WV for games Saturday and Sunday with the Nailers.
