Wheeling Nailers News Release
Two Leads, but Not the Last One
The Wheeling Nailers play their second game in as many nights on Saturday, following a back-and-forth tilt against the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling had 1-0 and 3-2 leads, but was unable to put the final punctuation on the contest, as the Wings lit the lamp twice in the third period, rallying back for the 4-3 win - their third in four games. Adam Krause opened the scoring just 1:33 into the game for the Nailers, while Ty Loney pulled the home team even with a second period power play marker. The final Wheeling lead was delivered by Sahir Gill, who scored off of a rush, which was started by goaltender Franky Palazzese. The second year netminder made 23 saves, but fell short, while Kalamazoo's Joel Martin stopped 33 on the winning side. Adam Phillips registered a three-point night for the Wings, which included two goals.
Happy to be Home
The Norfolk Admirals will experience a seven-game stretch later in November, in which they won't take the ice in front of their home fans at Norfolk Scope Arena. Road play has been anything but friendly for the Admirals thus far, as they are 0-3-0 away from Virginia, suffering losses by scores of 6-1, 6-3, and 6-3. However, the story has been different at home, where Norfolk is 3-1-0, after back-to-back wins over Quad City and Greenville. On Friday night, the Admirals and Swamp Rabbits entered the third period tied 2-2, before Alexandre Ranger and Connor Rankin tallied to give Norfolk a 4-2 triumph. Ty Rimmer backstopped his third win with 23 saves.
Scoring on Special Teams
In their first seven games of the regular season, the Nailers have seen their fair share of special teams goals both for and against, as 19 of 39 goals scored this year have been achieved with one team playing down a man. In Friday's game, Wheeling lit the lamp on the man advantage for the seventh time in the last six games, giving the Nailers at least one power play goal in five of seven games overall. However, the Wings converted on two of their five chances in Friday's game, making for nine opposition power play goals in 2015-16 - all of which have also been tallied in the last six games. Wheeling has outscored the opposition 2-1 while playing shorthanded, and 11-7 when the sides are at even strength. Norfolk has scored five power play goals, while allowing four to its opponents.
21 Minutes of Rest
For the second consecutive night, the Nailers will face an opponent whose goaltender has faced a heavy workload in the early part of the season. Ty Rimmer has received the decision in all seven of Norfolk's games, going 3-4-0 with a 2.84 goals against average, and a .917 save percentage. Rimmer's 401 minutes in the crease rank third in the ECHL behind Allen's Joel Rumpel and Kalamazoo's Joel Martin, while his 210 saves rank third, trailing the same duo in reverse order. The Admirals recently acquired Nic Riopel, who was 0-2-0 with the Rapid City Rush, to complement Rimmer and his teammate Philippe Cadorette. Wheeling has alternated its goalies over the first seven games, and is expected to do the same in game eight, as Brian Foster carries a 2-1-0 mark into Norfolk Scope Arena.
Already Bidding Farewell
Saturday night marks the third of five head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Admirals this season, as well as the third and final battle between the two clubs at Norfolk Scope Arena. Wheeling and Norfolk opened the 2015-16 campaign against each other with a two-game set on October 16th and 17th, as both squads skated away with one victory. The Nailers blanked the Admirals 3-0 on opening night, as Ty Loney tallied twice, and Franky Palazzese was perfect on 23 shots. One night later, Norfolk responded, scoring three times in the first period, en route to a 4-2 win, despite two goals by Wheeling's Jarrett Burton. The renewed rivals will clash at WesBanco Arena on January 3rd and March 13th.
