Silverthorn Pitches Shutout As Steelheads Coast Past RoadRunners 2-0

January 8, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

Phoenix, AZ - Newcomer J.B. Bittner collected one goal and one assist and goaltender Steve Silverthorn (20 saves) registered his second shutout of the season, as the Steelheads topped the Phoenix RoadRunners 2-0 at the US Airways Center on Monday night.

The victory pushes the Steelheads (18-14-1-1) back into second place in the West Division by the virtue of a higher winning percentage than the RoadRunners (18-15-1-1), as both teams sit with 38 points. The win also snaps the Steelheads three-game losing streak and is their 10th win away from home this season. Meanwhile, Silverthorn has not allowed a goal in the last 184:04 of game action, when adding in his back-to-back shutouts in the AHL over the weekend with the Iowa Stars. It's also Silverthorn's third shutout of his career against the RoadRunners.

After a scoreless opening stanza, the Steelheads took the lead at 2:06 of the second period when Marty Flichel buried his team-leading 14th goal of the season and his second in just the last 13 games. Flichel's one-timer from the slot beat Mike Morrison (40 saves) cleanly and banged off the post and then the crossbar before finally crossing the goal line. Bittner drew the first assist, while Lance Galbraith got the other helper. The goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, was Flichel's first game-winner of the season.

Bittner made it 2-0 at 14:44 of the second period getting an even-strength goal off his own rebound. Morrison stopped Bittner's initial chance from the left circles, but falling down, Bittner flipped the rebound over the glove of Morrison for his 12th of the season. Forwards Scott Burt and Colin Shields grabbed the assists.

There was no scoring in the third period, as the Steelheads out-shot the RoadRunners 42-20 for the contest. The Steelheads power play went zero-for-three, while the RoadRunners failed to score on their lone opportunity. The one power play allowed is a season-low for the Steelheads, while their four total penalty minutes is also the lowest of any game this season.

The Steelheads get a day off before taking on the RoadRunners on Wednesday, January 10. Face-off is at 7:11 p.m. MST. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets and all-star game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office. The 2007 RBK ECHL All-Star Game at Qwest Arena is a two-night event beginning on Tuesday, January 16. Tickets to both events start at just $25.
