Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans picked up four out of a possible six points this weekend as they have now won five of their last seven games to raise their record to 16-11-2. After falling, 5-3, to the Toledo Storm on Friday at the Toledo Sports Arena, the Titans found some redemption in Saturday's rematch, winning 3-1. Trenton completed their three-day, three-game weekend with a comeback victory over the Dayton Bombers, 4-2, on Sunday. The Titans will finish their six-game road stretch on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Cyclones before traveling back to Sovereign Bank Arena to host the Bombers this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
STORM SCORES SH SHOCKER: With the score tied 3-3 in the third period, Toledo Storm forward Ken Magowan scored a backbreaking shorthanded goal with 6:49 left in regulation that led to a 5-3 defeat for the Trenton Titans. Though the Titans would have a 2-0 lead after one period thanks to an even-strength and power play goal by Mike Pandolfo. The Storm would score the next three before Mark Pandolfo knotted the score 3-3 and the Titans went on the power play looking to retake the lead.
SPECIAL TEAMS TAME TOLEDO: The Titans used a 2-for-7 performance with the man-advantage to come away with a 3-1 win over the Storm on Saturday. The game's first goal didn't come until 16:59 of the second period when Rosario Ruggeri blasted a slapshot past Dominic Vicari for Trenton's first power play goal of the game. After Matt Zultek responded with the man-advantage for Toledo to make it 1-1 in the third, Trenton got back on top on the back of a power play goal by Troy Riddle. Jim Henkel notched the Titans' third special teams goal when he sent a face-off win down the ice for a shorthanded, empty-netter that sealed the victory.
MONDOU MUZZLES BOMBERS: Benoit Mondou's two goals allowed Trenton to twice come back from deficits and score a 4-2 win over the Dayton Bombers at the Nutter Center. With his team trailing 1-0 in the second period, Mondou tied the score with a goal on the power play. After the two teams traded goals in the final period, Mondou rattled off a highlight reel tally that gave the Titans their first lead of the game with just 3:24 left in the contest.
ROAD TRIP!: In the midst of the first of two six-game road trips this year, the Titans have gone 3-2 thus far with a match against the division leading Cincinnati Cyclones on the horizon. Trenton opened this stretch before 2007 falling to Reading Royals before beating the Wheeling Nailers on New Year's Eve. The Titans gained the split in Toledo and have strung together back-to-back wins with the help of the victory over Dayton on Sunday. At 7-6-1, Trenton is now one of two teams in the North Division (Dayton) that has a winning record on the road.
PP PICKS IT UP: A big factor in the Trenton's recent turnaround has been the success of the power play. In winning five of their last seven games, the Titans have notched at least one goal with the man-advantage in six of those contests. They've gone 8-for-34 (23.5%) in tallying power play goals in five consecutive games, while rising to third in the league in that category at 19.5% (38-for-195).
MASTERFUL MARTIN: Starting games on back-to-back nights for the first time since the first weekend of November, Joel Martin put together a stellar performance going 2-0-0 and turning away 79-of-82 shots. The fourth-year goaltender made 38 saves in a 3-1 win over Toledo on Saturday and stopped 41 on Sunday to record a 4-2 victory against Dayton.
