Inferno Wins Three At Division-Leader Texas

Columbia swept its three-game series at South Division leader Texas over the weekend and became the first team this season to win back-to-back games against the Wildcatters at Ford Arena.

Texas is 20-8-4 with 44 points tying it for first place in the South Division with Florida (22-10-0) and the two are tied for the overall league lead with Fresno (21-9-2) and Las Vegas (18-6-7), who are tied for first in the Pacific Division.

The three-game winning streak is a season high for Columbia which has won five of its last six games to improve to 13-16-4. The Inferno plays at Charlotte on Thursday before returning home to host Gwinnett on Friday, Charlotte on Saturday and Pensacola on Monday.

Jeff Miles leads Columbia with 20 assists and 31 points in 33 games while Owen Fussey is second with 26 points in 22 games and is tied for the team lead with 12 goals. Defenseman Mike Jarmuth is second on the team with 17 assists and third with five power-play goals and 25 points in 30 games. Brad Ralph, who leads the team with seven power-play goals and is tied for lead with 12 goals, has 24 points in 24 games which ties him for fourth with Mac Faulkner, who has 24 points (12g-12a) in 32 games.

Robert Gherson has won his last two games and is 4-1-0 in the last five games while Todd Ford is 1-0-0 with a goals-against average of 1.78 in two games since being reassigned from the American Hockey League by the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League on Jan. 5.


Gladiators Have Leading Power-Play Production
Gwinnett's Awe One Goal Shy Of League Record


Gwinnett's Jon Awe leads the ECHL with 15 power-play goals and is one power-play goal shy of the ECHL record for power-play goals by a defenseman set by Joe Cook of Columbus who scored 16 power-play goals in 1993-94 and tied by four-time ECHL Defenseman of the Year and seven-time ECHL All-Star Chris Valicevic in 1995-96.

Awe, who was voted as a starter for the American Conference for the ECHL All-Star Game on Jan. 17, scored his league-leading 15th power-play goal in a 6-4 win at Pensacola on Jan. 6, the 14th time in 31 games that he has scored a power-play goal. He leads league defensemen with 17 goals, 37 points, 17 power-play assists and 32 power-play points.

The Gladiators will host Pensacola on Thursday and Texas on Saturday and Monday while playing at Columbia on Friday.

Brad Schell, who was also voted as a starter for the All-Star Game, leads the league with 30 power-play assists and 38 power-play points while teammate Scott Mifsud is second with 27 power-play assists and tied with Awe for second with 32 power-play points. Schell is also the ECHL leader with 50 assists and 65 points while Mifsud is second with 38 assists and 52 points. Gwinnett's Colton Fretter, who was also selected to the All-Star Game, leads league rookies with 20 goals, 10 power-play goals and 38 points in 34 games.

The Gladiators average almost two power-play goals per game and lead the ECHL with 67 power-play goals in 34 games while their power-play unit is also atop the league at 26.2 percent (67-for-256). Gwinnett averages over two power-play goals per game at home with 37 power-play goals in 15 games and it home power-play unit leads the league at 31.1 percent while its road power-play unit is tied for the lead with Texas at 21.9 percent. The Gladiators scored 114 power-play goals in 2005-06, one shy of the league record of 115 power-play goals set by Nashville in 1995-96.

Gwinnett, which leads the league in scoring with 147 goals and 4.32 goals-per game, is 19-11-4 and in third place in the South Division with 42 points.



Everblades Tie ECHL Record With Four-Shorthand Goals

Florida scored four shorthand goals in its 9-7 win against Charlotte on Jan. 5, tying the ECHL record for shorthand goals in a game. .

It is the second time in less than a week that the record was tied as Augusta scored four shorthand goals in its 5-2 win against Charlotte on Dec. 31. Richmond scored four goals on Feb. 22, 1997 and repeated the feat on Dec. 6, 1998 while Johnstown accomplished it on Jan. 7, 2001. Augusta is the only team to score the shorthand goals in succession and in the same period. .

Leading 2-1 in the second period, Florida had back-to-back shorthand goals by Reggie Berg at 3:53 and Brad Zancanaro at 4:28. Zancanaro scored an unassisted shorthand goal at 14:00 of the second and then assisted on Berg's shorthand goal at 17:36 of the third. Berg and Zancanaro became the third and fourth players this season to score two shorthand goals in a game, joining Augusta's Louis Goulet (Dec. 31 against Charlotte) and Charlotte's Mark Lee (Dec. 2 against Augusta). .

Alaska's Vladimir Novak became the fifth player to score two shorthand goals on Jan. 6 when he scored back-to-back shorthand goals at 16:45 and 17:52 of the second period in a 6-0 win against Utah. .

Novak has five shorthand goals tying him for the league lead with Greg Hogeboom of Reading. Goulet is tied for fifth with three shorthand goals and Berg, Lee and Zancanaro are tied for 11th with two shorthand goals.

Florida has 13 shorthand goals tying it for the league lead with Fresno while Reading is third with 10 and Alaska and Augusta are tied for fourth with nine each. .
