West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAYTON, OH – Following a lightning and rain delay that lasted a few minutes longer the actual game, umpires waived off the final three-plus innings to give the Whitecaps a 5-2, six-inning victory in Dayton.
Scheduled West Michigan starter Lauren Gagnier was promoted by the Tigers to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday to make a spot start for the Mud Hens in Louisville. In Gagnier's absence, Kalamazoo native Andrew Hess made his first professional start and allowed just two run on three hits over four innings.
Keltavious Jones doubled to lead off the fifth inning against Hess. Mauricio Robles then came on in relief and threw a wild pitch to put Jones at third, but then struck out three batters in a row to end the inning.
Robles pitched the first two third of the bottom of the sixth inning before play was stopped due to lightning and ultimately called because of rain. He was credited with the victory.
Audy Ciriaco led the Whitecaps offense as he collected two doubles for the second game in a row. Ciriaco went 2- for-3 and had three RBI, including two on his second double in the fourth inning, which provided the final margin of victory. He has four doubles in the last two games.
Chris Carlson went 2-for-3 for West Michigan with an RBI, although his streak of three consecutive games with a home run came to a close. The Whitecaps team streak of six straight games with a homer also ended.
The only two runs scored by Dayton came on a home run by Zack Cozart in the third inning, which cut the ‘Caps lead to 3-2.
Dayton has lost six games in a row. It was the first rain- shorted game to become official for the Whitecaps this season.
