Lansing Lugnuts News Release
Bend, Ind. - The Lansing Lugnuts used a four-run sixth inning rally to propel themselves to a 5-2 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks Tuesday night at Coveleski Stadium. The win is the Lugnuts fifth straight overall and sixth consecutive on the road, dating back to a series in Dayton two weeks ago.
Lansing trailed 2-1 in the sixth when the Silver Hawks decided to bring reliever Josh Blake into the game for Jordan Norberto, who had allowed only one run in five frames. Blake immediately conceded three hits to load the bases full of Lugnuts. Moises Sierra then bounced into a fielder's choice that allowed Kevin Ahrens to score, tying the game at 2-2.
Manny Rodriguez followed that with a double into right field, plating John Tolisano and giving Lansing a 3-2 lead. Sierra would then score when Mike McDade bounced a ball to the shortstop, who tried to throw home to get the runner. However Sierra was able to slide to the back of the plate and just snuck his foot behind the tag. The final run of the inning came home when Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch, making it 5-2.
Luis Perez (2-5) was able to earn the win for Lansing after turning in his third straight quality start. He gave up two runs, both of which came in the third inning, and scattered five hits in the contest. Both of his wins this year have come against South Bend.
Cody Crowell tossed the ninth, picking up his eighth save of the season. He has not allowed a run to score in his last 15 appearances, spanning 20 1/3 innings.
Blake (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Hawks after surrendering all four runs to Lansing in the sixth.
Lansing (33-25) will go for their second sweep of South Bend (24-33) this season on Wednesday night. Southpaw Marc Rzepczynski (1-1, 2.38) will take the mound for the Lugnuts. He will be opposed by the Jarrod Parker (4-2, 2.45). The game is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
