Peoria Chiefs News Release

Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs got a strong outing from Robert Hernandez, but he was out-pitched by first rounder Phillippe Aumont as the Chiefs fell to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-2 Tuesday night. The loss gives the Chiefs a losing streak for the first time since May 19 and moves them to 24-34 on the season.

Wisconsin took an early lead for the first time in the series with an unearned run in the second. Joe Dunigan doubled off the centerfield wall with one out against Robert Hernandez. An error by Marquez Smith put runners on the corners and a wild pitch gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

Phillippe Aumont shut the Chiefs bats down through the first five innings. The only early threat for Peoria came in the third when Cliff Andersen tripled with one out and Nate Samson was hit by a pitch. Third baseman Ron Garth ended the threat with a great defensive play on a line drive from Brandon Guyer that resulted in a unassisted double play.

The Chiefs finally tied the game in the sixth against Aumont. With one out, Guyer singled and stole second to get into scoring position. After a strikeout, Smith reached on an infield single that hit Aumont in the leg and rolled into foul territory. Guyer came home to tie the game moments later on a wild pitch, but Dylan Johnston grounded out to end the inning.

Wisconsin wasted little time in regaining the lead as Kevin Kreier relieved Hernandez. Blake Ochoa started the inning with an infield single and Maximo Mendez reached on a bunt single. Juan Diaz doubled off the glove of Andersen in center, but Mendez made a base-running mistake and was caught between second and third for the first out. Edilio Colina followed with a twoprun single up the middle for a 3-1 lead. Garth singled to left to score Colina but was thrown out at second base to end the play.

The Chiefs got one back in the eighth against reliever Ryan Moorer. With one down, Samson tripled to right and scored on a sac fly by Guyer to cut the Wisconsin lead to 4-2. But the Chiefs wouldn't get another baserunner in the game as Keith Meyer nailed down his third save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

In his 2008 debut, Hernandez allowed just an unearned run on two hits over five innings. The 19-year-old struck out five, walked one and threw a wild pitch. Kreier took the loss allowing three runs on five hits and two strikeouts in his two innings of work. Jordan Latham threw the eighth inning and allowed two hits. Aumont, the 11th overall pick last June, was outstanding for the Rattler with six strikeouts and just one run allowed over a career-high seven innings.

Player of the Game - Robert Hernandez (SP) - Hernandez showed why he was originally slated to be the Chiefs Opening Day starter with five strong innings Tuesday night. The only run against him was unearned and he scattered two hits while striking out five.
