
Five 'Caps Named All-Stars

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Midwest League announced today that five Whitecaps players were selected to the league's annual All-Star Game on June 17 in Midland, Mich.
The Whitecaps selected to the MWL Eastern roster are 1B Chris Carlson, OF Casper Wells, INF Joe Tucker, RHP Alfredo Figaro and LHP Jon Kibler. Carlson will start the game at first base for the Eastern Division. The All-Stars were nominated and selected by the Field Managers of the Midwest League.
Carlson, a Topeka, Kansas native, has been the Whitecaps most consistent hitter this season, hitting .291 with nine doubles, seven home runs and leads the team with 32 RBI. The University of New Mexico product was selected in the 29th round of the 2006 draft.
Wells has provided plenty of pop to the Whitecaps lineup this season, becoming the quickest Whitecaps in history to reach 10 home runs. The resident of Schenectady, N.Y., is hitting .237 with 10 homers and 26 RBI. Wells is third in the Midwest League in home runs. Wells was drafted in the 14th round of the 2005 draft.
Tucker, a former Kent State University product, is hitting.273 with 15 RBI. Tucker has played the role of utility man for the Whitecaps, starting games at first base, second base, shortstop and the outfield. Tucker was selected by the Tigers in the 24th round of the 2006 draft.
Figaro has shutdown Midwest League hitters this season with a 7-2 record and 1.22 ERA with 61 strikeouts through 11 starts. He is second in the league with a 1.22 ERA. The Dominican Republic native has fired two complete-game shutouts this season and was named the MWL Pitcher of the Week on May 5. Figaro was signed by the Tigers as a minor league free agent on March 7, 2005.
Kibler, a Michigan State product, posted a 5-2 record and 2.20 ERA in nine starts with one complete game. He was awarded the MWL Pitcher of the Week on May 19. The southpaw from Freeland, Md., was drafted in the 30th round of the 2007 draft.
The All-Star game will be Tuesday, June 17 at the Dow Diamond, home of the Great Lakes Loons. Please find the attached Midwest League press release and complete rosters for the Eastern and Western squads.
