Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Quad Cities River Bandits mustered just four hits against three All-Star pitchers on Tuesday night, losing to the Beloit Snappers by a 5-0 score at Pohlman Field.

After learning earlier in the day that shortstop Pete Kozma, outfielder Charlie Kingrey, and pitcher Mark Diapoules had all been named Midwest League All-Stars, Quad Cities (29-27) struggled to get anything going against a trio of Snappers' pitchers that will also compete in the Midsummer Classic. Beloit (31-27) pulled one game ahead of the River Bandits in the standings with the victory, putting themselves in a position to take the series if they can win the finale on Wednesday night.

Starter David Bromberg (4-3) led the charge for the Snappers, tossing six shutout innings to earn the win. He racked up eight strikeouts to recapture the league-lead with 73 on the year, holding Quad Cities to just three hits and working around four walks. He was followed by Steven Hirschfeld, who allowed one hit over 1.2 frames, and Spencer Steedley (5), who struck out three of the four batters he faced and did not allow a baserunner to earn the save.

Meanwhile, the Snappers took an early lead in the bottom of the opening frame. With Garrett Olson at first and two outs Ozzie Lewis singled to left to prolong the inning. Steve Singleton followed by dumping a soft liner inside the right field line for an RBI-double, plating Olson to take a 1-0 advantage.

Beloit added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The bases were empty with two outs when Ramon Santana lifted a 2-0 pitch down the left field line for a solo homer. The umpires conferred at the manager's request before upholding the original ruling, and on the next pitch hitting coach Joe Kruzel was ejected from the contest for arguing the fair call from the dugout.

Beloit padded their 2-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Lewis opened the inning with a single and Singleton reached on an error to start the rally. Joe Benson's fly-out to right allowed the runners to advance to second and third, prompting Chuckie Fick to load the bases with an intentional walk. But Fick then issued a free pass to Santana that forced in a run, and later in the inning Ben Revere added a two-out, two-run single that put the snappers ahead by a 5-0 score.

Blake King (1-4) suffered the loss for Quad Cities, losing his fourth straight decision in the process. He lasted 3.2 innings while allowing two runs on three hits, striking out two but issuing six walks. He was on the verge of going four full innings after getting a double play ball to empty the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but Santana followed with a solo homer and Revere drew a walk on a full-count pitch to chase King from the game.

UP NEXT: The River Bandits are in the midst of an eight-game road trip that continues with the series finale in Beloit on Wednesday before moving up north to face the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a four-game series on Thursday. They return to Davenport on June 9 for a seven-game homestand against Peoria and Beloit that stretches into the All-Star break, and will feature promotions such as Incredible Hulk Night, Elvis Night, and a Bettendorf Life Fitness Center Stadium Cup Giveaway to name a few! Bandit Wear featuring the new team name and logo is currently available by visiting the Modern Woodmen Park team store, and season ticket packages, mini-packages, and the popular You-Pick-10 Plan are on sale at the park or by calling (563) 3-BANDITS!
