Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 3, 2008 - It was a night for the pitchers as the Kane County Cougars outdueled the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Both Kane County and Cedar Rapids had three hits, but Kane County made the best of theirs as Adam Klein drove in Danny Hamblin in the top of the eighth inning with the only run of the night.
Kernels starter Jordan Walden gave up just one hit and struck out nine over seven innings in a no-decision. His counterpart, Scott Mitchinson, allowed two hits and struck out five over six innings.
A passed ball played a big part in tonight's game, this time going against the Kernels. With runners on first and second, Anel De Los Santos had a pitch from Jordon Towns glance off his glove and roll 20 feet to the third base side of home plate, just far enough for the runners to move up a base. Klein then hit a line drive to center field and even though Clay Fuller was playing in, he had no chance to throw out Hambin at the plate.
Chad Kerfoot (2-0) held the Kernels to one hit over the final three innings to get the win and Towns (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
Gordie Gronkowski was 2 for 3 tonight with two singled and Hector Estrella added a single to extended his hitting streak to seven games.
The Kernels and Cougars wrap up their four game series on Wednesday night at 7 pm. It's a Z 102.9 Wii Wednesday - two lucky fans will have a chance to play Wii games on the Rockwell Collins GameLink before the game. Regular hot dogs are $1 and the first 250 fans through the gates receive a free bag of Popcorn Indiana popcorn. Gates open at 6 pm.
