Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
June 2, 2008 - Hector Estrella and Anel De Los Santos executed a perfect suicide squeeze play to cap a three run Kernels rally and give Cedar Rapids a 9-8 win over the Kane County Cougars on Monday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field.
The Kernels trailed 8-6 heading into the ninth, but tied the game as Tyler Johnson put down a sacrifice bunt to move Julio Perez and Jerry Gonzalez to second and third with one out. De Los Santos laced a single down the right field line to score Perez and Gonzalez. Clay Fuller drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
A passed ball by Jonathon Johnston with Andrew Romine up put De Los Santos at third, so Kane County intentionally waked Romine to load the bases and set up an inning ending double play. Hector Estrealla took the first pitch from reliever Justin Friend, and then managed to lay down a bunt on a high and tight pitch as De Los Santos raced home from third with the game wining run. Kernels reliever Ryan Brasier (1-3) picked up the win and Justin Friend (3-3) was tagged with the loss.
Starter Robert Fish battled all night and left the game with one out in the sixth inning and a 6-2 lead. Fish allowed three runs on five hits, walked three and struck out four in a no-decision effort.
Julio Perez led the Kernels offense, going 3 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI and Hector Estrella was 2 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Jay Brossman was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored and Gordie Gronkowski and Tyler Johnson both had an RBI.
The Kernels and Cougars continue their four game series on Tuesday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field. Fans can enjoy a combo meal of a sandwich, beverage and snack for just $6 on 1600 ESPN Radio Triple Play Tuesday. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
