Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - Scott Mitchinson and Chad Kerfoot combined on a three-hit shutout Tuesday night to lift the Kane County Cougars to a 1-0 victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 1,642 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Adam Klein drove in the game's only run with a two-out, eighth-inning single, and now the Cougars can win the series by taking Wednesday's finale.
Mitchinson ended up with a no-decision but certainly deserved a win. He's logged six quality starts in his last seven tries and hasn't allowed an earned run in 27 1/3 consecutive innings. He allowed two hits -- both singles -- and walked two while fanning five over six frames and also overcame a line drive in the first inning that hit his right hand.
Kerfoot (2-0) logged the final three innings and yielded only one hit to pick up the victory. The Cougars, who had only one hit through seven innings against Kernels starter Jordan Walden, broke through in the eighth off Jordon Towns (1-1). Danny Hamblin cracked a one-out single and took second on a passed ball. After Matt Ray drew a two-out out walk, Klein singled to left-center to score Hamblin for the game's only run.
The Cougars (35-22), who are back to their high-water mark of 13 games above .500 for the sixth time, conclude their four-game set with the Kernels (23-34) on Wednesday night at 7 CT. Craig Italiano (7-0, 0.65) will face Michael Anton (6-3, 2.38).
