Kalamazoo Wings News Release
K-Wings Ink Two More Including Marty Flichel
Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce the signings of forward Marty Flichel and defenseman Daniel Carriere for the upcoming 2003-2004 season; per team policy, the terms of the contracts will be undisclosed.
Flichel, 27, will be very familiar to K-Wing fans, as the right winger played 163 games in the former International Hockey League (IHL) for the Michigan K-Wings.
In 1994, the native of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan, was the 228th overall draft pick of the Dallas Stars in the 9th round of the National Hockey League Entry Draft.
The veteran forward will be entering his eighth season as a professional. For the past two seasons, Marty has been finding the back of the net, as he has registered back to back 30 goal seasons with the Tacoma Sabercats (2001-02) and Idaho Steelheads (2002-03) both of the former West Coast Hockey League.
"Marty gives us another offensive weapon," said Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach Mark Reeds. "To have a potent offense you need multi-dimensional players who can score goals, as well as help set other players up to score and Marty is that type of player."
Flichel will also give the K-Wings another player with playoff experience. In his career, Marty has played in 34 post-season games and has made the playoffs in each of his professional seasons.
"I have a lot of great memories from my time in Kalamazoo and I look forward to returning there," said Flichel. "We are developing a solid team and it should be a great season." Besides playing with the K-Wings and in the WCHL, Flichel has also played for the Dayton Bombers (ECHL) and in the British Elite League (BISL) for both the Nottingham Panthers and Manchester Storm.
Before turning pro, Marty played four seasons of Major Junior "A" hockey in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the Tacoma Rockets.
In addition to Flichel, the K-Wings also announce the signing of defenseman Daniel Carriere. The second year D-man played his rookie season last year for the Pee Dee Pride of the ECHL.
The native of St. Malo, Manitoba, finished his rookie campaign with 36 points (9 goals, 27 assists), 33 minutes in penalties, and a +4 rating.
Carriere helped guide the Pride to a third place finish in the Southeast Division of the ECHL's Southern Conference and a trip to the second round of the ECHL playoffs.
"Daniel is a solid defenseman that will give us a presence at the blue line," said Reeds. "He (Carriere) is coming off a good rookie season and we feel he will continue to develop as a great defenseman with the K-Wings."
Before turning pro, Carriere played four seasons of college hockey at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Currently, Daniel attended the training camp of the Rochester Americans (AHL), but is scheduled to be in Kalamazoo when the K-Wings start their training camp on October 12th.
With these recent signings, the K-Wings roster has grown to twelve players signed for the K-Wings' 30th Anniversary season. Season tickets for the 2003-2004 season are currently on sale by calling the Wings Stadium Box Office at (269) 345-5101.
