San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Gulls have re-signed center Sylvain Deschatelets, right-winger Clayton Read and defenseman Mike Garrow, General Manager and head coach Steve Martinson announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Deschatelets, 23, re-joins the Gulls for his second full season. Last season, Deschatelets scored a career high 63 points (23g, 40a) while amassing 182 penalty minutes in 65 games played. The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound native of Blainville, Quebec began the 2002-03 campaign with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears. Deschatelets started his professional career with the Gulls in the 2000 Taylor Cup Playoffs. He's also spent time in the East Coast and United hockey leagues.

Read, 27, is also in his sophomore campaign with the Blue and Orange. In 70 games last season, Read posted a career high 56 points (20g, 36a) and 28 penalty minutes. He was also a +21, which tied him for the team lead. The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba spent the previous three seasons in the West Coast Hockey League with the Anchorage Aces and Tacoma Sabercats. Read has increased his point total every season since he turned pro late in the 1998-99 season.

Garrow, 28, is also back for his second season with the Gulls. The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pounder from Kenora, Ontario led all San Diego defensemen with 33 points (10g, 23a) last season, which was seventh among all WCHL blue-liners. Garrow was third among WCHL defensemen with 10 goals, eight of which came on the power play. He also spent time with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies last season, sandwiching in 12 games. Garrow played for the Colorado Gold Kings in 2001-02 and was selected as the WCHL's Rookie of the Year.

"We're very happy to have these three players back," Martinson said. "Sylvain, Clayton and Mike were all key components in winning the Taylor Cup last season and we're looking for their talent and experience to carry over this season.

"All three have improved each season they've played and we expect that to continue. If so, we're going to make a good hockey club even better."

The Gulls will open their training camp Monday at the San Diego Ice Arena. San Diego begins its 2003-04 campaign Saturday, Oct. 18 in Bakersfield. The Home Opener is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Idaho Steelheads.
