Sharks extend streak to five with 4-3 win in Portland

PORTLAND, ME - The Sharks extend their season high win streak to five games with a 4-3 win over the Pirates in Portland on Wednesday Night.

Riley Armstrong would extend his season high five game point streak to six games, scoring a goal in his 3rd straight game, his 9th of the season at 7:21 of the first period with assists from Jamie McGinn and Derek Joslin. Riley would finish a goal mouth scramble with a wrist shot from the right circle past netminder Jhonas Enroth, The Sharks would kill off two Portland power plays outshooting the Pirates 9-7 in the opening period leading 1-0 after twenty minutes.

The Pirates would tie the game early in the second period at 1-1 after Felix Schutz finished a 3on2 break in the Sharks zone after a nice feed by Colin Murphy at :23 seconds. But the Sharks would fire back as Lukas Kaspar found the five hole for the right circle at 12:46 after the feed from Brad Staubitz. It was the 4th goal of the season for Lukas and his second straight game with a goal. Mike Moore would add insurance after a great slap shot from the right point as a power play expired. Moore's 2nd goal of the season found the top shelf and gave the Sharks insurance with a 3-1 lead. On the ensuing faceoff after the Sharks goal, Brett Westgarth and Jimmy Bonneau would drop the gloves and go toe-to-toe at center ice with both combatants connecting right hands. The Sharks led by two after forty minutes outshooting the Pirates 21-19.

Defenseman Mike Kostka would score his first professional goal at 6:32 after going coast to coast to open the scoring in the third period. Steven Zalewski gave the Sharks some insurance finishing a 3on2 after a nice feed by Kaspar at 13:46. The insurance proved to be the game winner as Kostka recorded his second goal of the night at 17:01 on the power play to cut the lead to 4-3. After a late charge, the Sharks held on for a 4-3 victory in Portland despite being outshot 34-30.

The win improves Worcester's record to 10-8-0-0, while the loss drops the Pirates to 12-3-1-1 record.

NOTES: Three Stars: (3) Mike Kostka, (2) Steven Zalewski, (1) Lukas Kaspar ... Attendance was 3,343...Tonight's game was the 2nd of ten meetings between the Worcester Sharks and the Portland Pirates this season as they battle for the Unum Cup. Worcester was outshot by the Pirates 30-34. Taylor Dakers made 31 saves in net for his 7th straight victory in the AHL dating back to last season. Jhonas Enroth made 26 saves in net for Portland... The Sharks went 0-3 on the power play while Pirates went 1-5.

Worcester will finish up their four game road trip on Friday in Providence for tilt at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 7:05 p.m. The Sharks return home to play Bridgeport on Saturday (7:05 p.m.) and Lowell on Sunday (4:05 p.m.).
