Pirates Lose 4-3 Against Sharks

Portland, ME - The Pirates fell for the third straight time, 4-3 at home against the Worcester Sharks. Portland made two comeback bids in the third period from two goals down, but could not get the game tied in the closing minutes.

The Pirates struggled in the first period, putting just 7 shots on net as the Sharks skated to a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Riley Armstong. The assists on Armstrong's ninth of the year went to Jamie McGinn and Derek Joslin. Armstrong extended a point streak to six games with the tally.

The Pirates would tie the game a mere 23 seconds into the second period as Felix Schutz scored his sixth goal of the year from Colin Murphy and Derek Whitmore. The score would stay tied at 1 for about 12 minutes before Worcester regained the lead. Lukas Kaspar netted his fourth goal of the season from Steven Zalewski and Brad Staubitz. The Sharks kept their momentum going with a goal by Mike Moore later in the second. Kaspar grabbed an assist along with Jason Demers and Worcester took a 3-1 lead into the final period.

The Pirates mounted a comeback effort in the third period. Mike Kostka scored his first career AHL goal 6:32 into the period when he fired a wrist shot from the right wing and beat Sharks goaltender Taylor Dakers inside the far post. Worcester would answer several minutes later when Steven Zalewski tallied his fourth goal of the year on a wrist shot from the left wing. Ryan Vesce and Lukas Kaspar picked up the helpers. Portland managed one more comeback attempt when Kostka scored the second goal of his career on a point shot past a screen with 2:59 left in the game. Tyler Bouck got the only assist on the power play goal, and the Pirates couldn't muster another goal and fell 4-3. Jhonas Enroth stopped 26 of 30 shots for the Pirates and took the loss. Taylor Dakers made 31 saves on 34 shots to pick up the victory for the Sharks.

Notes: Portland fell for the third time in a row...Mike Kostka scored his first two career AHL goals... Nathan Gerbe saw his point streak halted at 8 games. Attendance: 3,343.
