Rochester Americans News Release

(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans General Manager Jody Gage announced today that the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League have loaned forward Randall Gelech to the Amerks.

"We feel it was a great opportunity that presented itself to bring in a player like Randall who has played over 300 games at the American Hockey League level," said Gage. "He's a veteran, all-around player who will add size to our lineup and contribute leadership to our locker room and on the ice."

Gelech, 24, arrives in Rochester after appearing in five games with the Grand Rapids Griffins to start the 2008-09 American Hockey League season. A native of Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Gelech registered 15 points (7+8) in 70 games last season with the Griffins.

Prior to signing with Detroit as a free agent in July 2007, the 6-foot-2, 212-pound right wing played back-to-back seasons (2005-07) with the San Antonio Rampage, where he amassed 55 points (26+29) and 103 penalty minutes (PIM) in 154 total games. He recorded his best season as a pro during the 2006-07 campaign, capturing career highs in all offensive categories in points (34), goals (17) and assists (17).

He made his AHL debut in the 2004-05 season with the Utah Grizzlies, notching 27 points (15+12) in 76 appearances. Gelech was a seventh-round selection (208th overall) by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Before turning pro, Gelech played four seasons of junior hockey with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League, capturing 112 points (62+50) and 262 PIM in 237 total games. He also added 29 points (20+9) in 51 postseason contests.

Rochester kicks off a four-game in five-night stretch this morning as it travels north of the border to take on the Toronto Marlies at Ricoh Coliseum. The 11:30 a.m. school-day game will be the third of eight scheduled meetings between the two teams this season and will be broadcast tape-delayed on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and AHL Live. Fans can tune into the taped-delayed broadcast starting at 7:00 p.m.
