Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Just over two hours after arriving from San Antonio, newcomer Grant Potulny slotted in nicely on a line with Brandon Bochenski and Zenon Konopka. The trio combined for three goals and four assists as the Norfolk Admirals (6-10-1-3) defeated the Springfield Falcons (9-6-2-1) 6-4 on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The Admirals took a 1-0 lead just 1:46 into the game. Scott Jackson sent a shot from the right point that was deflected by Blair Jones past Springfield goaltender Devan Dubnyk.
The Falcons knotted the game up at 1-1 just over five minutes later with a deflection of their own. Gilbert Brule deflected a Sebastian Bisaillion shot past Norfolk backstop Karri Ramo at 7:06.
Norfolk answered back just under ten minutes later with a power play goal. Jones' point shot bounced off of Dubnyk into a goalmouth scramble and eventually ended up on the blade of Potulny. The newest member of the Admirals stashed home the rebound at 16:46.
Norfolk's lead doubled early in the second period with another power play goal. Jones' point shot was blocked and the puck ended up back on his blade. He dished it to Bochenski, whose shot from the top of the left faceoff circle eluded Dubnyk's glove 49 seconds into the stanza.
The Falcons responded with a power play goal of their own just over two minutes later. Cody Wild sent a shot from the point that was blocked, but Viacheslav Trukhno put the rebound past Ramo at 3:11.
Matt Smaby then restored Norfolk's two-goal lead late in the second period. He took a slap shot from the left point that was deflected by a Springfield defender in the left circle past Dubnyk at 18:44.
The third period started out with a Colin McDonald goal for the Falcons, as he scored on a deflection at 1:36 to make the score 4-3.
Less than a minute later, Radek Smolenak put the Admirals back in front by two. Konopka attempted a shot from the right circle that caromed off the skate of a Springfield defender in the slot to Smolenak in the left circle. Smolenak shot it over the stick of a diving Dubnyk at 2:18.
Six minutes later, Bochenski gave the Admirals a three-goal lead with his second tally of the game. Potulny earned his second point when his centering pass from the left corner ramped up off a defenders stick and landed in the slot right in front of Bochenski, who sent the puck between the legs of Dubnyk at 8:30.
Mathieu Roy scored for Springfield at 15:30 to close out scoring.
Karri Ramo (34 shots, 30 saves) picked up the win. Devan Dubnyk (36 shots, 30 saves) shouldered the loss.
Norfolk was 2-6 on the power play. Springfield was 3-11.
