Kalamazoo Wings News Release
WHEELING, WV - The Kalamazoo Wings were led by four points from Dane Fox, three points from Tanner Sorenson, and 35 saves from Joel Martin, as they skated to a 7-4 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena on Sunday.
Sorenson helped Kalamazoo spring out to an early lead for the second consecutive night on the road. After the Wings forced a turnover, Justin Kovacs floated a pass to the front of the Nailers' goal where Sorenson calmly buried the puck for his sixth goal of the season.
Early in the second period, Kalamazoo established a two-goal lead on a shorthanded tally from Alex Mallet. After Eric Kattelus forced a turnover, he found Mallet in the center of the ice near the Wheeling goal and Mallet poked it past Franky Palazzese.
Moments later, the Nailers cut the Wings lead to just a goal. Cody Wydo forced a turnover in the Wings' end and was able to fire a slap shot past Joel Martin.
It didn't take much time for the Wings to re-establish their two-goal lead in the second after continued pressure in the Wheeling end. After a scramble near the goalmouth, Lane Scheidl bashed a loose puck into the goal giving Kalamazoo a 3-1 advantage.
33 seconds later, Justin Taylor followed up a Scheidl try and was able to bury his eighth of the season on the second chance. It was Taylor's second goal in as many nights.
Scoring their third goal over the course of 1:31 of play, Kalamazoo cracked their lead open to four goals with Sorenson's second of the night. After a long shot from Cory Pritz was initially saved, Sorenson pushed in the rebound while on the doorstep.
Kalamazoo capped off a five-goal second period with terrific passing in the attacking zone late in the period. Kattelus, Sorenson and Adam Phillips connected on a tic-tac-toe play that left Phillips with a wide open goal at the backdoor. Phillips snapped a wrister and buried his sixth of the season to give Kalamazoo a 6-1 lead.
Wheeling came out in the third showing signs of life as Riley Brace steered a puck on goal that hopped off the pads of Martin, off a Wing, and into the goal.
Three minutes later, Wydo tallied his second of the night with a quick shot from the high slot area that cut the Wings' lead to three.
Brace followed up with his second of the night late in the third period, making it a two goal game, and giving Wheeling an opportunity to pull their goaltender for an extra attacker in the final stages.
With an empty Nailers' net, the Wings were able to seal the victory with Dane Fox's empty net tally with 39 seconds left in the game.
Notes: Kalamazoo scored a season-high seven goals. Tanner Sorenson had a career-high three points. Kalamazoo are 2-0-0-0 against Wheeling on the season at WesBanco Arena. Fox had four points. Seven Wings had multi-point games.
