December 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (14-12-4), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, scored two power-play goals on Sunday, but ultimately fell in overtime to the Atlanta Gladiators' (17-10-2) power play unit in a 3-2 setback at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Atlanta's Matt Register netted the game-winner on the man advantage at 2:52 of the extra session, while Ryan Rashid and Scott Fleming each scored in regulation for Greenville. Between the pipes, Allen York (0-4-1) tied a career-best with 42 saves on 45 shots.
With the setback, the Swamp Rabbits fell to 9-5-4 on SANDLAPPER Securities Rink this season. However, the club earned a point and has now amassed at least one point in six of its last seven games overall.
The Gladiators wasted no time in taking a 1-0 advantage as Patrick D'Amico opened the scoring at the 1:54 mark of the first period. After capturing the puck at the left point, Tyler Murovich skated to the left circle and fired a shot that skipped off York's left arm and sat in the blue paint, where D'Amico rushed to push it in for his eighth goal of the season.
The Swamp Rabbits responded at 9:46 of the opening frame when Rashid capitalized on Greenville's second power play opportunity for his seventh tally of the season. With former Greenville forward Thomas Frazee in the box for roughing, Rob Kwiet unloaded a blast from the blue line that was re-directed by Rashid, who tucked a shot from the slot past Atlanta goaltender Kent Patterson. Michael St. Croix was also credited with his team-leading 15th assist of the season.
Greenville struck again and took its first lead of the game at 14:25 of the second period courtesy of a power-play goal from Fleming. Following another minor to Frazee, this time for hooking, Jordan Knackstedt funneled a pass from the left circle to Bretton Cameron in the trapezoid, where the latter guided the puck to Fleming who finished in the low slot for his ninth goal of the season.
Atlanta rallied in the third period when its captain, Derek Nesbitt, notched the game-tying goal at the 12:49 mark. York stopped an initial shot by Register from the left point, but the rebound caromed to Nesbitt at the doorstep, and he capitalized for his team-leading 14th goal of the season.
With the game still deadlocked at the end of regulation, both clubs headed to overtime, where the contest would be decided for the second consecutive day. Following an impressive leg-pad save from York and a penalty to Cameron for hooking, Register collected a pass from Nesbitt at the top of the slot and buried a slap shot for his third goal of the season.
Greenville finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill. Patterson (10-3-1) halted 25 shots in the victory, while the Gladiators outshot the Swamp Rabbits 45-27.
