Royals Fall in OT After Late Game Five Goal Surge by Brampton, 6-5

Brampton, ON - The Reading Royals (---------OTL, 14-11-2-2=32) of the ECHL, affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League, were defeated in overtime by the Brampton Beast (win, 9-15-2-1=21), affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL, 6-5, at Powerade Centre in Brampton, Ontario.

In the first game of the only trip to Canadian soil of the year for Reading, the Royals scored first and built a 5-1 lead early in the third period, scoring an empty-net short-handed goal 5:09 into the final frame to build the four goal advantage. But from that point forward, an offensive avalanche from the Beast buried Reading in overtime. Brampton rang off four goals in a span of 9:59 starting half-way into the final frame to get to OT, where the Beast bagged their third power play goal of the game 2:22 into the extra frame to claim the two points and snap a six game winless streak (0-4-1-1). For Reading, the team has claimed at least a point in 7 of the last 8 games (4-1-2-1).

For the sixth straight game-and the seventh time in the last eight played-Reading struck first 5:47 into the opening period, when Robbie Czarnik bagged his team leading fourteenth goal of the year after finishing a multi-shot rebound flurry in tight on Brampton starter Andy Isles.

Brampton tied the game and snapped a shutout streak of 146:22 for Royals' goaltender Adam Morrison when they bagged the first of what would be three power play goals as Angelo Micelli cut right to left starting at the goal line and forcing his way across the top of the crease, jamming the puck home for his fourth of the year.

Despite being penned in the defensive zone for a big chunk of the second frame, the Royals struck for a pair late in the period to push the lead to 3-1. The first came on the team's only power play chance of the game when Mike Marcou struck for his first of the year on a snap shot from the top of the right circle 15:58 into the second. 1:25 after that, Scott Tanski, who played his junior hockey in Brampton, uncorked a rocket out of the right circle that beat Isles over his right shoulder for his second of the year. That goal chased Iles in favor of goaltender Trevor Cann, who came in and was immediately called upon to make a brilliant save as time was ticking down in the period on a breakaway for Pavel Padakin.

2:16 into the third period, Reading stretched the lead to 4-1 after a strong forecheck push early in the final frame resulted in a puck possession for Padakin, who walked out from below the goal line, cut to the low slot and slid a back-hand between the legs of Cann for his third of the year.

The Royals went up 5-1 5:09 into the final frame on a rather unusual short-handed empty netter with still 14:51 left in regulation time. Brampton was awarded their fourth power play chance of the game 3:56 into the third and apparently seeking to spark the offense, pulled the goaltender to give the team a six-on-four skating advantage. Reading made them pay when Tanski buried one into the empty net for his second of the night and the fourth short-handed goal of the year for Reading.

Things began to devolve for the Royals 9:30 into the third when Scott Jacklin re-directed a Dalton Thrower slap shot from the right point. The downward deflection skipped off the ice and over the left arm of Morris for Jacklin's sixth of the year. 12:41 into the third, Travis Brown made it 5-3 with a hot rocket from the high slot that appeared to catch all three pipes before falling behind Morrison and into the net.

The Beast cut the lead to one (5-4) on their second power play goal of the night with 3:44 remaining. After an extended scramble around the Royals' cage, Micelli forced the puck over the goal line for his second of the night and fifth of the year. And Brampton then tied the game with 30.3 seconds remaining after a similar scramble ended with Chris Auger punching it home for his tenth of the year.

Reading had a golden chance in OT when Cam Reid slipped behind the Brampton defense and created his own breakaway opportunity. But Cann rejected that bid, and on the ensuing back-check Reid picked up a hooking minor as he harassed a Brampton player attempting to gain entry in the offensive end. Brampton didn't waste the four-on-three PP chance in OT. Jeremie Blain uncorked a low bullet from the top of the left circle and Brandon Marino angled it into the upper reaches of the net to drop Reading to 0-4 (0-2 in OT / 0-2 in the shootout) in games that have gone beyond regulation time this season.

The Royals and Beast go at it again tomorrow (Monday, December 28 @ 7:15) at Powerade Centre. The game night broadcast for Monday's matchup can be heard live on CBS SportsRadio 1240 am and 98.5 in Reading, Pennsylvania, starting with the pre-game warm-up show presented by Highmark Blue Shield at 6:45 pm Eastern Time.
