Beast Complete Four-Goal Comeback to Defeat Royals in Overtime

December 27, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Brampton Beast News Release

BRAMPTON, ON - The Brampton Beast found themselves trailing 5-1 in the third period but dug deep and scored four straight goals in the third period before captain Brandon Marino completed the comeback with the game-winner in overtime as the Beast earned a hard-fought 6-5 win at the Powerade Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Angelo Miceli netted a pair of goals in his return to the Beast lineup, while Scott Jacklin, Travis Brown and Chris Auger each added singles to help the Beast snap a six-game winless skid.

Reading jumped out to an early lead in the first period as Robbie Czarnik jumped on a rebound in front of Beast starting goaltender Andy Iles at 5:47.

The remainder of the first period was an evenly-played affair, with Brampton leading 10-5 on the shot clock.

Miceli tied the game at 1-1 at 6:22 of the second period as he collected the puck on the goal line, made his way to the front of the net and slid the puck behind Royals starting goaltender Adam Morrison.

Later in the second period, Reading's Mike Marcou gave his club a 2-1 lead, taking a drop pass from Cam Reid and snapping a perfect shot beyond the glove hand of Iles for a power play goal at 15:58.

Reading took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission thanks to a quick shot by former Brampton Battalion Scott Tanski, who beat Iles at 17:23. The goal ended Iles' night. He would finish the night with 11 saves in just over 37 minutes of ice time.

The Royals took a commanding 4-1 early in the third period as Pavel Padakin squeezed a puck through Beast relief goaltender Trevor Cann's legs at 2:16.

Just under three minutes later, with the Royals' Matt Hatch in the penalty box, Beast head coach Colin Chaulk elected to pull his goaltender with almost 15 minutes left in the game. Tanski made the Beast pay, netting his second of the game into the empty net for a shorthanded goal at 5:09.

After allowing the fifth Reading goal, the Beast turned on the intensity in a big way.

At the 9:30 mark of the final frame, Jacklin got his stick on a Dalton Thrower point shot to cut the lead to 5-2.

And the Beast kept on coming. Travis Brown sent a quick one-timer on goal from the point that beat Morrison on the inside of the post, cutting the deficit to 5-3 at 12:41.

Miceli's second of the game at 16:16 of the third period brought the Powerade Centre faithful to its feet as the Beast cut the lead to 5-4. He was able to locate a rebound in front of Morrison and tucked it under the bar with time running out on the clock.

In the final minute of play, the Royals weren't able to match the pace set by the Beast and Chris Auger made them pay. With 30.5 seconds left to play, Auger found a loose puck deep in the slot in front of Morrison and slid it behind the goaltender, tying the game at five.

From that point on, there was no stopping the Beast. With the Royals' Cam Reid taking an ill-timed hooking penalty in overtime, Jeremie Blain settled the puck down at the point and sent a hard shot toward the net. Marino got his stick on the puck and deflected it behind the goaltender at 2:22, giving the Beast an incredible 6-5 overtime victory.

Notes: The Beast finished the game 3-for-6 on the power play and 0-for-1 on the penalty kill. Molson Three Stars: 3) Scott Tanski 2) Chris Auger 1) Angelo Miceli.

The Beast and the Royals will face off again at the Powerade Centre tomorrow night at 7:15 PM. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
