Wheeling Nailers News Release

Wheeling, WV - The posts were unfriendly to the Nailers as they blasted back to back shots in rapid succession off the metal in overtime eventually dropping a 7-6 decision in a shootout against the Reading Royals. Wheeling scored a season high 5 goals in a single period in building a 6-3 lead in the contest. Scoring for Wheeling were Jordan Morrison (11), Chris Davis (10), Aaron Clarke (24), Andrew Lord (16), Blair Yaworski (14) and Colin Power (7). In the shootout, Kyle Bushee tallied the lone goal for the Nailers.

An action packed first period began when Andrew Lord dropped the gloves with Scott Landon :39 into the game.

5:47 into the period, Jordan Morrison caught goalie Matt Dalton off guard and snuck one by right off the faceoff to give the Nailers an early 1-0 lead.

Ryan Schnell blasted Rob LaLonde behind the Reading cage which resulted in Schnell taking a five minute major and game misconduct.

On a Reading breakaway Stefano Giliati raced up ice and knocked one past Adam Berkhoel on the backhand with :08 left on the power play to tie the game 1-1.

The Nailers scored 5 goals in the second, a season high for goals in a period.

Chris Davis found open ice from the left-wing, danced into the crease and snuck it in around Reading goalie Matt Dalton for the Nailers 2nd lead of the game 2-1.

Minutes later, a 2 on 0 break away allowed Reading to tie it up 2-2. Stefano Giliati scored for his second of the game.

Wheeling struck back about 30 seconds later after a rebound was fired home by Aaron Clarke, making the score 3-2.

Former Wheeling Nailer and last year's Rookie of the Year Bryan "Boomer" Ewing tied it up again 3-3 when he snuck one in 5 hole on Berkhoel on a soft dump in.

The scoring wasn't over when Andrew Lord flipped a backhander in top shelf past Dalton on the power play to give the Nailers a 4-3 lead.

Just 29 seconds later, Blair Yaworski picked up the rebound from Kevin Schmidt's blast and fired it in on the blocker side of Dalton to stretch the Nailers' lead to two goals, 5-3.

At the end of the 2nd, Blair Yaworski gathered up more points as he set up Colin Power. Power blasted in a slap shot and extended the lead once more to 6-3.

The Royals began the third period with a pair of goals just 9 seconds apart as Joey Ryan and Daniel Steiner lit the lamp, cutting the Nailers' lead to 6-5.

Less than a minute later TJ Fox was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped up on a breakaway attempt. Fox took a wide angle and was unable to cash in on the opportunity.

Reading tied up the game for the 4th time of the night about midway through the 3rd, 6-6, when Yannick Riendeau picked up a rebound after a Berkhoel save and pushed it home.

Regulation ended in that same 6-6 tie, meaning the Royals officially clinched a playoff spot with the point.

Neither team scored in overtime, taking the game to a shootout but Wheeling excited the crowd with a little over a minute left in the OT when Aaron Clarke rang a blast off the right-wing post. The rebound came straight out to Jon D'Aversa on the left-wing who connected with the metal on his side.

In the shootout, Bushee was the only Wheeling player to cash in giving the Royals the win. It was the last matchup between the two teams and the only appearance for the Royals at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling ended the season with a record of 1-1-2 against Reading.

Wheeling outshot the Royals 39-30 in the game including 7-1 in the overtime. Reading went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Nailers were 1-for-5. Wheeling's record moves to 32-32-7 while Reading improved to 36-29-6.
