Johnstown Chiefs News Release

CINCINNATI, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs were unable to win their third game of the season in Cincinnati as they fell to the Cyclones by a 5-1 score on Friday night.

Spurred on by a crowd of over 10,000 the Cyclones put forth an impressive effort in the first period. They sent 16 shots John Murray's way and three of them were able to find paydirt. Johnstown was awarded the first power play of the game and put two quick shots on the board, but Jeremy Smith was up to task both times. After 24 minutes of penalty time were issued because of a scrum that took place at 8:13 Cincinnati ended up with its first power play. That went by the wayside, but a four-on-four goal by Jason Josza made it 1-0 at 10:23. Following that were Brett Robinson at 13:13 and Dustin Sproat at 15:35. Somerset, Pennsylvania native Cullen Eddy assisted on Robinson's goal for his first pro point.

The second period saw Johnstown gain a lot of traction, especially in the offensive zone, as the Chiefs tried to sway momentum back in their favor. Things took a near disastrous turn when Barret Ehgoetz was awarded a penalty shot 56 seconds in. Murray came through with the big save, though, and gave the Chiefs some life. Shots favored the Chiefs 18-10 in the frame and they were able to snake one shot behind Smith. Jim McKenzie used a beautiful backhand shot to send one home over Smith's blocker at 4:35 of the period. The Chiefs' attack never relented in the frame, but Smith battened down the hatches and did not allow another goal. Late in the frame, Josza was able to slip a slap shot through Murray's pads and re-give Cincinnati its three-goal lead.

Johnstown couldn't muster the same effort in the third as they did in the second, and the comeback never materialized. Cincinnati built its lead to four goals when Doug Drantz lazered home a slap shot on the power play with 9:12 left to play. The game took a rough turn in the late stages of the third when Brett Robinson instigated a fight with Jeff Martens. The scrap came with just 31 seconds left in the game, but the fisticuffs weren't done. Chanse Fitzpatrick took a turn with Krantz 15 seconds later and traded haymakers with the Cyclones' defenseman.

John Murray took the loss in making 26 saves. The Chiefs went 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Chiefs conclude their 2009-10 schedule tomorrow night in Johnstown against the Elmira Jackals and faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. ET. The game is officially a sellout.
