Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Phoenix, AZ - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, did a full circle in their six-game road trip to start and finish in Phoenix. In game one of the two-game series, Victoria kept in stride with the Roadrunners, until the third period when Phoenix tallied two powerplay goals for the 4-2 win in front of 2,972 fans at the U.S. Airways Center.
Phoenix Centre Chris Ferraro earned his first ECHL goal at 7:33 into the opening period, batting his own rebound past Goaltender Julien Ellis, who started in his fourth game of the road trip. The Salmon Kings defeated a 5-on-3 Phoenix powerplay to remain within one.
Victoria tied the game 1-1 in the second stanza as Jordan Krestanovich found a streaking Milan Gajic for the breakaway. Gajic, who was recently returned to the Salmon Kings by the Moose, scored his seventh goal of the season shooting five-hole on netminder Mike Morrison. With 3:25 remaining in the second, Ferraro found his second goal of the night, banking a shot off a Salmon Kings defender for the 2-1 lead.
Heading into the final period Victoria was outshot 25-12, but was the first to strike and tie the game 2-2. Derek Krestanovich capitalized on a feed from Darryl Lloyd shortly after a Victoria powerplay expired. The puck was dug out of the corner and Krestanovich beat Morrison with a low shot from the slot for his sixth goal of the season.
The Roadrunners broke the Salmon Kings' perfect penalty kill at 9:09 into the third. During the Roadrunners' sixth powerplay of the game, winger Todd Jackson took a no-look shot from the left corner and it redirected off a Salmon Kings skate for the go-ahead goal. Phoenix added another powerplay marker in a swift tic-tac-toe finish from Justin Aikins with 2:51 remaining in the game.
Final score: 4-2 Roadrunners
Morrison earned his third win of the season, and Ellis suffered his ninth loss. Victoria was scoreless on three powerplay chances and Phoenix was 2 for 7 with the man advantage. The Roadrunners outshot the Salmon Kings 39-20. Victoria (9-16-0-1) wrap up the road trip with game two versus Phoenix (15-11-1-0) on December 23, starting at 7:11 p.m. (MT) at the U.S. Airways Center.
The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a three-game series (Dec 29, 30, and Jan 1) against the Alaska Aces. Join the players on the ice after the 1:05 p.m. game on Monday January 1st for another round of "Skate with the Salmon Kings". The skate session is by donation and proceeds benefit the Booster Club.
