Sacramento River Cats News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The River Cats were bested by the Tacoma Rainiers, 2-1, in a 14-inning, four-and-a-half hour marathon on Monday night at Cheney Stadium.

The River Cats struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Daric Barton RBI single. With the 1-0 lead still intact in the seventh, reliever Paul Smyth entered the game and surrendered a controversial game-tying solo home run to Tacoma's Brandon Bantz. The River Cats contested the ball was foul, and Cats manager Steve Scarsone and pitching coach Rick Rodriguez both were ejected for arguing the call. The home run stood up, and the game remained tied until the 14th frame.

In the 14th, Tacoma's Brad Miller led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, and scored the winning run on an Abraham Almonte walk-off single.

Justin Thomas started for Sacramento but did not figure in the decision, scattering just four hits in six scoreless innings. After the game-tying homer, the River Cats bullpen threw seven scoreless innings before Mike Ekstrom (1-1) allowed the winning run in his second inning of work.

Forrest Snow (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing three innings without allowing a run and striking out four.

Sacramento was held to just eight hits in the game, only one of which went for extra bases. The River Cats had their best opportunity to break the tie in the 10th inning, when Andy Parrino doubled with Hiro Nakajima on second base. But Nakajima held up-thinking the ball might be caught-and did not score on the play. Later in the inning, Nakajima was thrown out at home trying to tag on a Grant Green flyout to right field.

The two teams conclude the series Tuesday morning, when River Cats RHP Travis Banwart (2-2, 5.45 ERA) will face off against Tacoma RHP Andrew Carraway (6-1, 2.98 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 a.m. from Cheney Stadium.

The River Cats return home Friday, June 14, for a four-game set against Tacoma, featuring a pair of fireworks shows and the annual Father's Day Baseball and BBQ event at Raley Field, set for Sunday, June 16.
