Sacramento River Cats News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Luke Montz went 4-for-5 with all six River Cats RBIs, and was just a triple short of the cycle, helping Sacramento beat the Tacoma Rainiers by a score of 6-2 in the series finale at Cheney Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The River Cats wasted no time putting a crooked number on the board, as Jemile Weeks and Grant Green led off the game with back-to-back singles. After Scott Moore struck out swinging, Montz doubled to left-center field, bringing Weeks and Green home to give Sacramento a 2-0 lead after one.
The River Cats scored three more times in the fifth on a three-run homer from Montz, driving in Green and Moore. Sacramento's sixth and final run came in the top of the seventh when Montz singled through the hole at shortstop, bringing home Weeks who doubled to lead off the frame.
The Rainiers only run production came in the bottom of the seventh when, after starter Travis Banwart exited the game, two runs crossed the plate on a single from designated hitter Stefen Romero, cutting the Sacramento lead to four. The River Cats bullpen settled down and shut out the Rainiers for the remainder of the contest, giving Sacramento a 6-2 win.
Banwart had one of his best outings of the season, striking out eight in six shutout innings with two hits and four walks. Reliever Darren Byrd was charged with two unearned runs, while Pedro Figueroa and Chris Resop combined on 2.2 scoreless innings.
Montz is now hitting .323 on the year with six home runs and 18 RBIs. Weeks and Green each went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Weeks' seventh-inning double was the only River Cats extra-base hit not delivered by Montz.
The win earned Sacramento a series sweep as they now hit the road for Tucson after an off day on Wednesday. On Thursday at 7:05 p.m., top prospect Sonny Gray (5-3, 2.40 ERA) will start opposite T-Pads lefty Robbie Erlin (4-0, 3.79 ERA) to open a four-game set at Kino Stadium.
The River Cats return home Friday, June 14, for a four-game set against Tacoma, featuring a pair of fireworks shows and the annual Father's Day Baseball and BBQ event at Raley Field, set for Sunday, June 16.
