OMAHA, Neb. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (25-32) suffered their fourth consecutive loss to the first place Memphis Redbirds (31-27) in a 2-1 pitchers' duel in front of the fourth largest crowd this season at 6,751 fans. The loss drops the Chasers to 5.5 back in the division race, the largest deficit they have faced since the tail end of the 2010 season.
Omaha starter Everett Teaford and Memphis' Boone Whiting both went five innings with each allowing just one run and three hits. Teaford was making his fourth spot start of the season, the most of any Storm Chasers reliever, and in his 15.0 innings as a starter this season the left-hander has allowed just four earned runs with 15 strikeouts and two walks. The solo homer Teaford let up to former Storm Chaser Jamie Romak was the first run he has allowed as a starter against the Redbirds in his career (17.0 total innings).
Rightfielder Xavier Nady launched a second inning homer off Whiting to give Omaha its first lead since the series opener, while also giving him a team-leading ten long bombs on the season. Nady was one of only five players on the team to notch a hit on the day, as Omaha was held to five or less hits for the fifth time and less than five runs for the seventh time in eight meetings with Memphis. The homer tied Nady for the team lead in RBI at 33 with Johnny Giavotella.
The Redbirds totaled eight homers in the five-game series at Werner Park, the most home runs allowed in any series this season for the Storm Chasers, after Memphis had only one round-tripper in the first series in early May. Omaha starters allowed seven of the eight homers, after they had allowed only nine homers as a group in the entire month of May.
After a league-wide PCL off day on Wednesday, the Storm Chasers will look to get back on the winning track Thursday as they send out right-hander Yordano Ventura who is rated as the number three prospect in Kansas City organization. Ventura totaled 74 strikeouts in 57.2 innings for Double-A Northwest Arkansas before his promotion to Omaha, while posting a .189 opponent batting average. Ventura will face off with fellow righty Asher Wojciechowski (2-2, 3.94), who held the Chasers to one run in six innings of work on May 30 during Omaha's last roadtrip. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
