Memphis Redbirds News Release

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Memphis Redbirds (31-27) defeated the Omaha Storm Chasers (25-32) by a 2-1 margin in a day game at Werner Park on Tuesday. The victory gave the Redbirds a 4-1 series win over the Storm Chasers.

The Redbirds are now a season-high 5 1/2 games ahead of the Storm Chasers in the PCL American Northern Division. Memphis' four-game winning streak matches a season best.

Redbirds' starter Boone Whiting earned the win (3-1), allowing just one run over five innings on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Jamie Romak homered, Ryan Jackson and Chris Swauger both doubled, and Brock Peterson knocked in the winning run on get-away day.

Omaha took the initial lead in the second inning on a full-count, lead-off home run from Xavier Nady. The right-fielder's 10th homer of the year put the Storm Chasers up 1-0.

The Redbirds knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning when Romak hit a two-out solo blast over the left-field wall. Romak's 11th jack ties him with Peterson for the club lead and the two are tied for second in the PCL home run chase.

Jackson greeted Omaha reliever Donnie Joseph with a double to open the sixth inning. One out later, Peterson plated the runner from second for the go-ahead run. The 2-1 score would prove to be the final tally on the day.

Jorge Rondon threw scoreless sixth and seventh innings, giving up two hits while striking out two. Michael Blazek picked up his first save of the season and was overpowering in the eighth and ninth, striking out two of the minimum six batters he faced.

Omaha starter Everett Teaford gave up a run over five innings on three hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Joseph took the loss (1-3), while Michael Mariot tossed the final two clean frames for the Storm Chasers.

After an off day on Wednesday, the Redbirds return to AutoZone Park for a 10-game, eight-day homestand against Nashville and New Orleans starting Thursday. In the series opener, right-hander Richard Castillo (0-1, 2.31) climbs the hill for Memphis against Nashville righty Johnny Hellweg (4-4, 3.65) for the 7:05 p.m. CT first pitch.
