Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds won a 4-3 nail-biter over the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate, Milwaukee Brewers) on a sunny Saturday night at AutoZone Park. The 'Birds have won four of the first five games this week against the Sounds.

The story of the evening was stellar starting pitching from Jake Woodford, who allowed just two runs in seven innings for Memphis (45-50) with four strikeouts and one walk. It was the longest start this season for Woodford, who has made six starts with the Redbirds after spending the bulk of the season with St. Louis as a reliever. Woodford also threw 99 pitches in the outing, a new season high.

Buoyed by the excellent starting pitching, the Redbirds offense tagged Nashville (51-44) for four runs in the first four innings. Nolan Gorman smacked a solo home run in the first and later scored in the third on an RBI double from Conner Capel. Gorman now has eight home runs in Triple-A, while Capel has doubled four times in the past three games.

Ali Sánchez also added an RBI single in the third, with the scoring capped off via a fourth-inning single from Brendan Donovan that brought home Evan Mendoza (he tripled leading off the inning). It was the first RBI in Triple-A for Donovan - he was called up from Double-A Springfield earlier this week.

Tommy Parsons made a triumphant return to the pitcher's mound on Saturday night, working a 1-2-3 eighth inning with two strikeouts. The righthander had not pitched since July 15th.

Kodi Whitley came on to shut the door in the top of the ninth inning, but it would not be a smooth ride to the finish line. Keston Hiura walked leading off the frame, followed by an RBI double from David Dahl that scored Hiura and made the game 4-3. A walk and a bunt single immediately after that loaded the bases with nobody out, but luckily, Whitley packed some pixie dust. He retired the next three batters via a flyout, fielder's choice groundout and another flyout, securing another Redbirds win against the Sounds.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
