Rainiers walk off on River Cats to close out series
April 28, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
Tacoma, Wash. - Despite six innings of solid work from right-hander Shaun Anderson, the Sacramento River Cats (12-11) lost 4-3 on Sunday afternoon as the Tacoma Rainiers (9-15) walked off on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Heading to the final frame down one, catcher Stephen Vogt led off with his third home run of the season to give the River Cats new life. But the Rainiers would load the bases in the bottom half of the inning and eventually give Sacramento, who walked off against Tacoma twice in their first series of the year, a taste of their own medicine.
Anderson struck out a career-high nine batters in what was his most dominant start of the 2019 season. His lone hiccup was allowing a three-run homer to Rainiers outfielder Braden Bishop, which were the only three runs in the game for Tacoma until the ninth. Anderson's previous career high was eight, which he had accomplished four times before, most recently on June 4, 2018 while pitching for the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
The club will fly to Albuquerque for the second leg of this nine-game homestand. Lefty Ty Blach (1-0, 4.34) will get game one of the four-game series and is set to face Isotopes left-hander Evan Grills (1-2, 7.36). First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m. (PT). Catch all of the action live online at rivercats.com, on the MiLB First Pitch app, or on Money 105.5 FM beginning at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
Additional Notes
- Third baseman Zach Green got the scoring started for Sacramento with a solo shot in the third inning. It was his fifth home run of the season, which leads the club, but doesn't even put him in the league's top-25.
- Austin Slater drew two more walks on Sunday to bring his team-leading total to 17, good enough for second best in the PCL. He's now reached base 24 times in his last 11 games.
