Today's Game: The OKC Dodgers and San Antonio Missions play the final game of their five-game series at 2:05 p.m. at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. The Dodgers have lost the first four games of the series and are trying to avoid being swept in a five-game series for just the second time since OKC re-joined the PCL in 1998. The Dodgers have lost nine of their last 10 games overall and 11 of the last 14 games.
Last Game: San Antonio racked up 15 hits and held the Dodgers to no runs for the second time in three games, leading to a 6-0 victory for the home team Saturday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium. The Missions scored one run each in the first and second innings, mostly thanks to Nate Orf. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and then scored on a RBI double by Mauricio Dubon. In his next at-bat in the second inning, Orf collected a RBI single to make it 2-0. San Antonio doubled its lead it the fourth inning. Cory Spangenberg led off with a home run, and Dubon collected his second hit and RBI of the night later in the inning with a single. More two-out runs crossed in the fifth and sixth innings, with RBI doubles by David Freitas and Keston Hiura. The Dodgers notched just one extra-base hit and went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Missions reliever Miguel Sanchez retired all seven batters he faced and earned the win after starting pitcher Corbin Burnes was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning. Sanchez (1-2) inherited the bases loaded and faced Will Smith, who sharply lined out to third base to end the inning. Dodgers starting pitcher Rob Zastryzny took a second straight loss after allowing five runs and a career-high 11 hits over 4.2 innings. He tied his season high with six strikeouts and did not allow a walk.
Today's Probable Pitcher: Daniel Corcino (1-1) makes his team-leading fifth start for OKC this afternoon and second start of the season against the Missions...Corcino picked up the win in his last start April 22 against the Iowa Cubs, allowing four runs (two earned) and four hits over 5.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts as OKC won, 8-5, at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. After allowing four runs in the first inning on a pair of two-run homers, he retired 12 of the final 15 batters he faced. He also connected on his first career home run, sending a two-run shot to left field to begin the team's comeback...Corcino's 20 total strikeouts are second-most among Dodgers pitchers and he has issued just five walks...Corcino spent most of 2018 with the OKC Dodgers, tying for the club lead in starts (19) and ranking second in innings (103.1) and strikeouts (102). He posted a 3.40 ERA and held opponents to a .217 average...The Dodgers went 12-7 in his starts although his personal record was only 3-3...He was originally signed as an amateur free agent with the Reds Jan. 11, 2008 and began his second career stint in the Dodgers organization after signing as a free agent on May 11, 2017...In Corcino's season debut, he pitched against the Missions April 5 in OKC, allowing two runs and four hits over 5.0 innings with one walk and seven strikeouts and did not factor into the decision.
Against the Missions: 2019: 2-7 2018: N/A All-time: 2-7 At SA: 0-4
The Missions and Dodgers meet for their second series of the month and for the first time ever at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium. The Wolff has been far from hospitable so far, as the Dodgers are 0-4 and have batted just .177 (20x113) with six runs scored, including only three over the past 30 innings...The Missions won the season-opening series against the Dodgers at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, 3-2. Four the five games were decided by one or two runs, with three games decided in the winning team's final at-bat...San Antonio joined the league for 2019 as the Milwaukee Brewers' Triple-A affiliate following the relocation of the Colorado Springs franchise. The Missions previously played in the Double-A Texas League most recently from 1968-2018...The Dodgers went 9-7 against Colorado Springs in 2018, closing out the regular season with four straight victories in elimination games to pass the Sky Sox and win the American Northern Division title.
Sweepstakes: The Dodgers enter today's series finale trying to avoid a sweep. OKC has only been swept in one five-game series since re-joining the PCL in 1998, losing a five-game set Aug. 27-30, 2009 at Iowa in a series that included a doubleheader...In fact, OKC has only been swept in four total series since July 2015 (including two three-game series) and have not been swept in a road series of at least four games since May 23-26, 2016 at Fresno...The Dodgers successfully averted a four-game sweep in their previous series against Iowa, winning, 8-5, in the finale.
On Strike: Dodgers pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts Saturday night for OKC's ninth game with at least 10 strikeouts this month and sixth game with at least 12 K's. The Dodgers pace the PCL American Conference with 215 strikeouts over 181.0 innings. Tacoma leads the league with 221 strikeouts total, but has pitched 21.0 more innings than OKC...The Dodgers established the PCL single-season record for strikeouts in both 2016 and 2017, with 1,245 and 1,277 K's, respectively. However, Fresno bested both of those totals last season with 1,330 K's...In nine games against San Antonio this season, Dodgers pitchers have racked up 108 strikeouts (73.0 IP).
Inauspicious April: The Dodgers have lost nine of the last 10 games and are now eight games below .500 for the first time since Sept. 4, 2011 (67-75). An OKC team has not been nine games below .500 since Aug. 27, 2011 (63-72)...Between the 2012-18 seasons, there were only four instances the team was as much as three games below .500 at any point of a season...With three games remaining in April, the Dodgers will finish the first month of the season with a losing record for just the sixth time since re-joining the PCL in 1998 (2011: 8-14; 2009: 9-10; 2006: 9-15; 2005: 11-12; 2002: 12-14). Only the 2002 and 2005 teams bounced back to reach the playoffs...Last year, the team didn't lose its 15th game until Game 43 (May 23)...The team's seven wins are the fewest through 22 games over the last 22 seasons.
Off the Matt: Infielder Matt Beaty picked up his team-leading 22nd hit of the season Saturday night and has now hit safely in 17 of his first 21 games of 2019. He has seven extra-base hits, along with seven RBI and nine runs scored...Beaty was limited to 31 games with the Dodgers last season due to injury, collecting 28 hits with 12 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Quiet Riot: The Dodgers were held to five hits Saturday night, marking the third time in the last four games they have been held to five or fewer hits...OKC went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position last night, and the team is now 2-for-29 with runners in scoring position during the current series and 1-for-the-last-28...Saturday marked the Dodgers' third shutout loss of the season and second in three games at San Antonio...OKC has scored three or fewer runs in four straight games and in 13 of their first 22 games of the season, going 1-12 in those contests. Their 84 total runs so far in 2019 rank 15th in the 16-team PCL. Their 15 homers rank last in the league, with 14 of the other 15 teams hitting at least 22 homers, and OKC has been held without a home run in three straight games for the first time this season.
Around the Horn: Kyle Garlick doubled last night for his team-leading eighth extra-base hit of 2019. His .516 slugging percentage leads all qualified players on the team as well...San Antonio has hit seven home runs over the first four games of the series, as the Dodgers have now allowed at least one home run in eight straight games, with 15 homers total during the stretch accounting for 26 total runs...Over the past two games the Missions are 12-for-25 with two outs and have scored eight of their 10 runs with two down.
