Offensive Explosion Gives Iowa Series Lead
August 22, 2023 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (69-49) moved back to 20 games over .500 with a 10-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians (55-64), Tuesday at Victory Field.
Iowa jumped on Indianapolis early with a four-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Jake Slaughter. The deep fly marked his team-leading 20th home run of the year.
They padded their lead in the second with an RBI single from Darius Hill to go up 5-0. That was all the run support Shane Greene would need, as the righty spun 5.0 scoreless innings in his fourth start of the year.
Bryce Windham used a single in the fifth inning to bring in a sixth run for Iowa, but Indianapolis broke through in their half of the inning. Solo home runs from Miguel Andújar and Jared Triolo made it 6-2.
The I-Cubs stormed right back with their second four-run inning of the game, scoring on back-to-back home runs from Matt Mervis and Alexander Canario as well as another RBI single from Windham.
A two-run single from Domingo Leyba in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-4, but Cam Sanders came in and spun 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the victory for Iowa.
POSTGAME NOTES:
