St. Paul Saints News Release

PAPILLION, NE - The St. Paul Saints came into Tuesday night's game against the Omaha Storm Chasers atop the West Division. The Storm Chasers were dead last in the division, second worst record in the International League, and 2-15 in August. None of that mattered as the Saints walked nine Storm Chasers hitters, hit another batter, as eight of those 10 came into score, in a 14-4 loss at Werner Park. The loss drops the Saints to 26-20 on the season.

The Saints started the game off with a bang. The second pitch of the game, Andrew Stevenson hit an opposite field homer to left, the seventh leadoff homer for the Saints this season and fourth by Stevenson, making it 1-0. It was Stevenson's career-tying high 16th homer of the year. The Saints went back-to-back for the sixth time this season when Austin Martin drilled a solo homer down the left field line, his fifth of the season, putting the Saints up 2-0.

It was all downhill after that as the Storm Chasers were able to get to Louie Varland. In the second, the Storm Chasers used a couple of walks and a costly error to plate five runs. With one out back-to-back walks to Nick Loftin and Devin Mann put runners at first and second. Nate Eaton made it 2-1 with an RBI double to left. Logan Porter reached on a fielding error by shortstop Brooks Lee that scored two runs giving the Storm Chasers a 3-2 lead. With two outs Bubba Thompson hit a two-run homer to left, his first with the Storm Chasers, making it 5-2.

The Storm Chasers added two more in the third. With one out, Major League rehabber Nick Pratto singled to right-center. Loftin followed with a walk. Mann made it 7-2 with a two-run double to left.

The Saints grabbed two back in the fourth. Anthony Prato led off the inning with a single into right and, with one out, Jair Camargo singled to right-center putting runners at first and second. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. made it 7-3 with an RBI single to left center. A wild pitch scored Camargo getting the Saints to within 7-4.

The Storm Chasers would score seven unanswered after that as walks hurt the Saints in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reliever Austin Brice walked the first two batters of the inning and with two outs walked Porter to load the bases. Clay Dungan increased the Storm Chasers lead to 9-4 with a two-run single to right.

The Storm Chasers added to their lead in the sixth off the newest Saints pitcher, Francis Peguero. After starting off his Triple-A debut in style with a strikeout, Peguero hit Edward Olivares, walked Pratto, and gave up an RBI single to Loftin making it 10-4.

In the seventh the Storm Chasers continued to take advantage of the free passes. Porter led off with a walk and moved to third on a double from Dungan. Thompson's RBI single made it 11-4. With one out Olivares increased the lead to 12-4 with a sacrifice fly.

Another walk came into score for the Storm Chasers in the eighth. With two outs and nobody on, Ronny Henriquez walked Eaton. Three straight singles scored two runs as Porter, Dungan, and Thompson all had base hits with the last two driving in runs making it 14-4.

The same two teams meet in game two of a six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. at Werner Park. The Saints send RHP Blayne Enlow (2-5, 9.20) to the mound against Storm Chasers LHP Anthony Veneziano (4-3, 3.98). The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
