Bats Drop Series Opener to Toledo

Louisville Bats News Release

LOUISVILLE, KY - The Louisville Bats (63-56) erased an early seven-run deficit but could not complete the comeback as they fell by a score of 24-10 to open up their series against the Toledo Mud Hens (56-64) on Tuesday night.

Chuckie Robinson went 2-4 at the plate with a season-high five RBIs to lead the way for the Bats on a night where five Louisville hitters recorded more than one hit and six different starters drove a run in.

The Bats totaled 13 hits, eight of which went for extra bases, but were unable to generate enough offense to keep pace with the Mud Hens who put up the most runs by a Louisville opponent in franchise history.

Toledo scored in each of the first three innings of the game to open up a 7-0 advantage, with four runs crossing in the first before adding another in the second and two more in the third.

Alejo Lopez got the Bats on the board by crushing a solo home run over the right-field wall in the home half of the third and Louisville tacked on two more runs in the fourth to cut the deficit down to 7-3. Jose Barrero led the inning off with a triple, jogging home off an RBI double from Drew Mount who subsequently scored on another RBI double from Jhonny Pereda.

The Mud Hens plated another run in the fifth to bring their lead up to 8-3, but the Bats exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to tie the game up at eight runs apiece.

Jason Vosler and Barrero got the rally started with back-to-back solo home runs with Vosler's home run marking his 14th of the season and fourth in the last six games and Barrero's shot standing as his 11th of the campaign.

Mount and Pereda then notched base hits before Robinson homered for the second consecutive game, scoring three runs for Louisville with one swing of the bat.

Despite the offensive eruption from the Bats to tie the game, Toledo countered with eight runs in the top of the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 20-8 lead.

Robinson capped off his stellar day at the plate with a two-run single in the seventh, as he drove in half of Louisville's runs on the night.

Toledo put up four more runs in the ninth to close out the evening with Eric Yang making his first career pitching appearance as the Bats looked to preserve their pitching for the remainder of the week.

Randy Wynne (3-3, 5.91 ERA) tossed a pair of scoreless innings in relief, allowing only two hits while striking out two batters, while Tejay Antone (0-0, 4.32 ERA) turned in a scoreless inning of his own.

Tomorrow's contest will feature Louisville RHP Michael Mariot (4-2, 6.03 ERA) in his return from the injured list to face off against RHP Keider Montero (1-1, 6.30) for Toledo.
