Bats Quieted in 3-1 Loss

One big swing from the Toledo Mud Hens was enough to hand the Louisville Bats a 3-1 loss on Wednesday night.

The scoreless tie was broken in the bottom of the third as a walk and a single put to on with two outs for Jace Jung. On a 2-1 pitch, Bats starter Kent Emanuel hung a sweeper at the top of the zone and Jung crushed it over the right field fence for a three-run homer to open the scoring.

The three-run homer was the only blemish on Emanuel's start. In his final scheduled start of the regular season, Emanuel allowed three earned runs on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts, finishing with a quality start. Zach McCambley kept the Mud Hens off the board for the rest of the evening with 2.0 scoreless relief innings.

However, Toledo starter Jackson Wolf was a little better. He kept the Bats off the board until the fifth, when a Garrett Hampson RBI single to center scored Dominic Fletcher with the first Bats run. Wolf retired the next two hitters to hold the lead.

In the sixth, the Bats loaded the bases and chased Wolf from the game with two outs. In a crucial spot, Nick Sandlin entered and induced a fly out from P.J. Higgins to hold the 3-1 lead.

The Bats did not get a baserunner from there until Leo Balcazar began the ninth with a walk off Tanner Rainey. Rainey rebounded to retire the next three hitters he faced, ending the win.

Louisville left eight men on base in the loss, going just 1-for-6 with men in scoring position.
