Red Wings Playoff Push

There is nothing comfortable about the final week of a September playoff race. Every at-bat feels bigger. Every pitching change gets a little more attention. And the out-of-town scoreboard suddenly becomes required reading.

Your Rochester Red Wings are right in the middle of that kind of finish.

Tuesday's 9-8 loss in Buffalo was a reminder of how little separates a big win from a missed opportunity. The Wings kept fighting, but the late rally came up short. Five games remain, all against the Bisons, and the race is getting tighter.

Rochester and Indianapolis now share the best second-half record at 41-29. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is one game back, Syracuse is a game and a half behind, and Worcester sits two back. There is still plenty within reach, but there is very little room to give anything away.

The Matchup: Rochester's Offense Against Buffalo's Big-Inning Potential

Rochester's ability to score remains one of the biggest reasons to believe this team can finish the job.

Even in Tuesday's loss, the Wings put eight runs on the board. Leandro Pineda extended his on-base streak to 32 games, giving Rochester another example of the consistent production that keeps this lineup dangerous.

That is the formula the Wings need to keep following. Get runners aboard. Extend an inning. Make the pitcher work before asking somebody to deliver the big swing.

But Tuesday also showed exactly why Buffalo cannot be taken lightly. The Bisons put together two four-run innings, with Daz Cameron driving in five runs. Rochester nearly overcame it, but asking the offense to keep answering that kind of damage is a difficult way to win a series.

For the Wings, the biggest opportunity is pairing their offense with better damage control. Limit the free passes. Make the play that ends an inning. Keep a difficult stretch from becoming a crooked number on the scoreboard.

The bats give Rochester a chance every night. Keeping Buffalo's big innings off the board would give those bats a lot more room to work.

The Other Scoreboard: Scranton and Jacksonville

While Rochester works through Buffalo, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is facing Jacksonville, and the RailRiders wasted no time applying pressure.

Scranton took Tuesday's opener 6-5, drawing eight walks and stealing seven bases. Duke Ellis drove in two runs, stole three bags, and extended his hitting streak to 12 games. That is a reminder that the RailRiders can create offense without waiting for a ball to leave the yard.

For Jacksonville, the challenge is keeping those extra opportunities under control. Walks become more costly when the next runner can steal second, force a rushed throw, or score on a single.

But the Jumbo Shrimp showed they can make Scranton work until the final out. Logan Driscoll hit a two-run homer in the ninth Tuesday, bringing Jacksonville within a run. The comeback fell short, but the power threat is still there.

The matchup comes down to whether Jacksonville can keep Scranton off the bases long enough for its own offense to make a difference. Rochester fans have a reason to watch. We just can't count on that series doing our work for us.

The Race Is Bigger Than Two Teams

Indianapolis has made sure of that.

The Indians have won four straight and pulled even with Rochester. Their latest win was an 8-6 victory at Gwinnett on Tuesday, and they finish the season against the Stripers. Syracuse is facing Lehigh Valley, while Worcester is taking on Durham. There are several scoreboards worth following now.

That changes the feel of the final stretch. A Scranton loss would help, but it is only one piece of the picture. Rochester needs to keep adding wins while several other contenders try to put together one last run.

At this point, the most useful scoreboard is still the one in Buffalo.
