Monarchs Picked Off By Pirates

PORTLAND, ME - Center Tim Brent scored a goal and collected two assists as the Portland Pirates topped the Manchester Monarchs, 3-1, in front of 6,064 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Friday night.

Manchester (12-9-5-1) is tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Division with 30 points. Portland (15-8-1-2) remains in first place in the Atlantic Division with 33 points.

Right wing Konstantin Pushkarev collected his third tally of the season at 8:09 of the second period to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Right wing Tim Jackman picked up the lone assist on the goal as he sent the puck to the net and Pushkarev, on the left doorstep, jammed it past Pirates netminder Nathan Marsters.

The Pirates evened the game at 1-1 with at power play goal off the stick of right wing Pierre Parenteau at 13:19 of the middle frame. Cycling the puck and looking for the perfect shot, Brent slid it over to left wing Bjorn Melin who fed it over to Parenteau at the left point. Parenteau sent the puck sailing under Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera's right arm and into the back of the net.

Brent scored a shorthanded goal 54-seconds into the third period to give Portland the 2-1 lead. Forward Drew Miller stole the puck from the Monarchs defense and sent the puck sliding through the crease in front of LaBarbera. Brent was skating by the left side of the crease and nudged the puck past LaBarbera's toes and over the goal line for his 10th mark of the season.

Forward Ryan Carter doubled the Pirates lead with his sixth goal of the season at 15:18 of the final period. Miller dug the puck out of the right corner deep in the Monarchs zone and fed a pass to Carter streaking between the hash marks. Carter snapped a one-timer past LaBarbera for a 3-1 lead. Brent collected his third point of the night with an assist on the goal.

LaBarbera took the loss stopping 17 shots. Marsters earned the win with 24 saves.

Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Portland went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
