Center Rejoins Iowa After Playing Against Twin Brother

December 15, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release

DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced this afternoon that the National Hockey League's (NHL) Dallas Stars have loaned Center Joel Lundqvist to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa.

A native of Are, Sweden, Lundqvist is in his first professional season in North America. In 25 games with Iowa, the 24-year-old Lundqvist is currently leading the team with 22 points, including a team-high 14 assists: 25(8/14/22). He has five multiple point games. Prior to coming to North America, he played in 253 career regular season games with Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League. While with the Goteborg-based club, he registered 55 goals, 82 assists, and 541 penalty minutes: 253(55/82/137)541.

Selected by the Dallas Stars with their third selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut with Dallas earlier this month, appearing in four games during his initial recall. Recalled again yesterday, Lundqvist, along with his identical twin brother Henrik skated their way into National Hockey League history last night. Joel, playing center for Dallas and Henrik, playing goal for the New York Rangers, became just the third set of twins in the 90-year history of the NHL to play on opposite teams in the same game. Joel had just under six minutes of ice time and no shots, while Henrik had a 43-save performance in New York's 5-2 win.

The Sutter twins, Ron and Rich, played on the same team several times during their careers, but they also faced each other 17 times as well. Last night's game marked the first time since March 14th, 1994 when Rich, playing for the Chicago Blackhawks, and Ron, playing for the Quebec Nordiques, had twin brothers play against one-another. The first set of twins to play against each other were the Sundstrom twins, Patrik and Peter. Patrik and Peter faced each other 18 times during their careers, with the last game happening in December, 1988.

Twins Peter and Chris Ferraro have faced each other several time during their AHL careers, but never in the NHL. Both of the Sedin twins, Daniel and Henrik, play for the Vancouver Canucks.

Iowa Stars Head Coach Dave Allison (Montreal Canadiens) and his brother Mike (NY Rangers) both appeared in pre-game warm-ups during a 1983-84 game between the Canadiens and Rangers, however Mike did not dress for the actual game.
