Iowa Chops News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Iowa Stars and the Peoria Rivermen faced-off for the fourth time this season on Friday night and the third time at Carver Arena in Illinois. Scoring five goals on their first nine shots, the Iowa Stars snapped a franchise-high five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Peoria Rivermen.
The Stars were able to score the first goal of the game for the first time in four games, jumping out to an early lead just 2:30 into the opening period. Rookie forward Chris Conner was sprung loose off a face-off and skated in on a breakaway on Peoria Goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu and beat the netminder for his seventh goal of the season. Iowa grabbed a 2-0 lead just over six minutes later. Junior Lessard, alone at the bottom of the right face-off circle, took a pass from Joel Lundqvist, and sent the puck past Beckford-Tseu for his 10th goal of the season. Peter Sejna pulled the Rivermen to within one with 2:49 left in the first period. Fifty-nine seconds later, Junior Lessard picked-up his team-leading 11th tally of the season with a breakaway goal. The team's seventh shorthanded goal gave Iowa a 3-1 lead going into the first intermission and ended the night of Chris Beckford-Tseu.
Iowa continued their offensive onslaught, picking up where they left off early in the second period. Iowa's Vojtech Polak tallied his seventh of the season just 1:16 into the middle stanza. One minute and 25 seconds later, Joel Lundqvist, just down from the Dallas Stars (NHL), gave Iowa a 5-1 lead. His goal gave Iowa five goals on nine shots. Peter Sejna notched his second of the contest for Peoria's second goal of the game at the 11:36 mark.
The only goal of the third period came on a wrap-around shot by Peoria's Charles Linglet. The Rivermen's third goal of the game came at 14:54 of the final frame.
Iowa Stars Goaltender Tobias Stephan made 46 saves, including 18 in the third and final period.
